Re: Purple Martins are arriving in northwest PA

No big wave yet here Bill. Just 5 here with a couple birds moving through as well. Should be a lot more coming in this week. They are a bit later this year.

Re: Whoop-EE

Hey Mike, Remember last year the nesting season got pushed back a few weeks from the May cold snap. It also took out much of the population in my area. I did not lose many however. I have 4 birds in as of this morning. But there is only one other report in PA. A few of mine laid eggs during the cold...

They are coming in here in pa.

First male in has his mate back. Also 2 other males here. The air is full of Martin music. Great time of year!

Keep your eye to the sky in the northeast.

Re: Solitary confinement about over...finally.

The other male showed up today. He is much more vocal than the first male. Stayed out feeding until after 7:30 and almost dark. He went right into the gourd I figured. It was the other early nest from last year. These early arrivals were the males from the 2 nests that eggs were laid before the cold...

Solitary confinement about over...finally.

Looks good for this lonely male (Buddy) that came in on the 10th to finally get some company this week. Conditions will be favorable for migration most all of next week and the calendar also agrees it is time too. The only company he has had is me, and the bluebird pair that is hanging around. They ...

Re: Early arrival behavior is interesting.

When I got home about 5:45 pm I whistled but no Martin. Temperature 43 degrees. Played with the dog for a bit and tried again but he did not come out. Curiosity got the best of me and I decided to lower the rack. One click of the winch and out he flew. After soaring the sky for a bit he did a series...

Early arrival behavior is interesting.

It seems each year I get this one male Martin that shows up well before any other birds. Usually it's the 2nd or 3rd week in March. Several years ago he endured almost 2 weeks of sub freezing temperatures. Lakes and streams were all frozen over. Part of that time lows were below zero and highs in th...

Re: Early Bird In PA

Mike, no need to train. He is my earliest bird the past several years. Comes right to the porch for crickets. Unusually warm weather since his arrival. He spends the day out somewhere. Ducks in before evening rather early. Usually takes a few crickets in the morning before he heads out. He is doing ...

Thanks for the report Bill.

One of those birds made it all the way up to my site already. I saw you had an early one as well this year.

Re: Early Bird In PA

Thanks for the best wishes. Went out this morning and whistled and out he came. Thawed some crickets and we had breakfast together. He flies right to my elevated porch and snatches them a few feet off my hand. What a cool bird. Great to have him back. Talked to Joe from PMCA this morning and he gree...

Early Bird In PA

Was out controlling sparrows and starlings and giving the bluebirds a few mealworms early. Great morning for coffee on the porch. Went in and came back out. A few starlings scattered and a black silhouette disappeared into a gourd. Could it be? I had an inkling for tomorrow or Friday but...... Sure ...

Re: Prediction on Iowa's first arrival.

It's been a while since I did any predictions but......I couldn't resist. If there's a likely day possible for easy flight into Iowa any time soon it's tomorrow. The winds are extremely favorable for an early bird to arrive. However it would likely be a late day arrival and may not be seen until Thu...

Re: Successful Year

Unusual but good year here as well. Started out late due to the very cold late spring. One pair laid eggs throughout the cold and was weeks ahead of the rest. Also had one nest just hatch a week ago. So I will have a very late one as well. Should fledge about 165 total this year. I had more subadult...

SY birds in good numbers.

The past several days big groups of SY Martins have come in here. They are filling in any void left by the deaths of the extended cold spring weather. Young females are pairing quickly with ASY males and pairs of them taking any open vacancies. There are some years that only a pair or two can find a...

Freeze dried. But would recommend a supplement for any extended period of feeding.

Re: Cold/Cool weather questions.

After a low temperature of 60 last night and a high yesterday of 70 my site is jumping. Seems many returned here as well.

Plus some new ones and first sub adult males. The tree swallows were also gone and are now chittering around too. What a difference a few days can make!
