Re: Why I don’t have Martins back?

Hey Whippy, Thanks for your input on my post. This will be my 2nd. Year with Martins. Still trying to understand how they work. One more question, do you think a 5 gal. bucket upside down on my post will work for a snake guard? Or do you think they can get past it. I personally don't have an issue ...

Re: Why I don’t have Martins back?

I may be getting ahead of my self but I’ve been watching the migration chart where some are getting birds up to 2 weeks early. Then I thought about the snake & maybe that’s why they are not here. I think I need to be more patient & it will be ok. Thanks for your input Dean. Hey, Tommy. For the previ...

Re: Mites

I have not used cedar shavings myself but have read on this site about it holding moisture more so than pine needles. Moisture is a bad thing for incubating eggs and hatchlings as it robs much needed heat from them. In addition, eggs can sift through them and get buried to the point where the paren...

Re: My number one got home tonight

As mentioned I was able to watch birds coming in to roost tonight for the first time. I, at one time, had 5 Martins in my airspace but ultimately 4 Martins came in to roost. It is early but it looks like I have two pairs already. I've never had Martins in February so this is pretty cool. I'm also us...

Here he is this morning on his gourd courting a female. There's another ASY that came home to his number 3 gourd around the back side of this photo out of view.

Re: Round vs crescent entrances

I wanted to add this photo to show the inside of the door where the tunnels are attached and how it is cut out to prevent the Martins from getting trapped between the tunnel entrance and the main door panel.

Re: Round vs crescent entrances

Scout, Welcome to the forum. Flyin-lowe is exactly right. If there is a problem with starlings, a crescent and or Conley entrances is/are a must. I, however, do not have problems with starlings. In fact, I've seen one in the last 6 years of my colony. It came in, checked out a couple of gourds, then...

Re: Wasps and PM housing

so what do ya'll use to dispatch the wasps? i know we are hesitant to use a lot of chemicals. I shoot 'em with wasp spray then take the gourd down and clean it. Takes about 10 minutes or so. I've had wasps build nests on the inside roof of the gourds, even on the bedding material. Someone many year...

Re: Wasps and PM housing

Here's an interesting tidbit. I found a yellow jacket nest in a gourd late last season. So I closed off the entrance and they could not get in or our of the gourd I figured they would die of starvation. So long after all my Martins left I decided to look into the gourd and check to see if all the wa...

Re: Back with a bang

Hey CC. That's great to hear. I mentioned just a few minutes ago in my thread that I had 5 in my airspace this evening. Had my number one return earlier this week. I had 2 flying around the next day. Then 3 the next day then 5 today. They are definitely working their way in. Please post numbers when...

Re: My number one got home tonight

I had 5 Martins in my airspace this evening. I didn't get a chance to stay and watch them come to roost so I'm not sure if any of the 5 besides my number one are returning residents. I will get to watch that tomorrow (Sunday). Looks like they are increasing in numbers rapidly. More later. Coolwhips

Re: Wasps and PM housing

Brad, Every year I have to deal with wasps. I'll have a wasp build a nest in a vacant gourd then I gotta go in and take it out. I wasp proofed my Trio Wade by putting pieces of window screen on all of the vent holes and gaps I could find. When I acquired the Trio from across the alley from a neighbo...

Re: My number one got home tonight

Quick update: Just now watched Number One courting a female and there was one other ASY male flying around. So I had of a total three in my airspace today. I figured for a while I would use this thread to report increasing numbers at my location for those who have an interest in the returning birds....

Re: Weat Straw

Hey, Unk. I use pine straw to get them started. My Martins ultimately add oak leaves and other materials like zip ties, pull tabs etc. Hell, I found a ticket stub in a nest as well. Pine straw resists water and will dry out faster. I don't have experience with wheat straw but I've heard it will reta...

Re: new housing set up question

Hey, Jeff. I personally don't know the magical answer to that. Due to space constraints, my gourd rack is about 25 feet from my Trio Wade and T-14. My T-14 and Trio are 10 feet apart as I may be taking the Trio out but see no problem with those two being so close. No reason other than that's just ho...

Re: Playing Dawnsong

Whippy, Wouldn't you know they chose the Northern facing gourd! Preferred is they would have chosen the South, but not complaining. Kappy You know, Kappy. The gourds that got taken first in my rack were the North facing gourds. I know you have seen your Martins exit the gourds and haul butt out of ...
