Re: S and K Manufacturing's plastic houses,

I've had S&K houses (two) and kept them for over ten years. You may want to keep some paint on them so they look presentable. Never considered changing the roof color from green to say white before, even though it does get hot here in So La. It is what it is in the summer. Yeah, its plastic and over...

Re: The Grim Reaper In Action At Her Favorite Tree On June 10 and June 21, 2020

Maybe you can cut that tree down.

I too have a hawk that takes some of my martins. I have
spent many hours outside watching out for these birds. Now they have done their thing
for this year, and have gone until next season and it will start all over again.

Re: My Martins just vanished!!!

Hi, My experience every year is the birds come and have their honeymoon, then get down to building nest. They have their young feed and raise them and as the little ones start to fly it's seems to be party time for all. Then they stop using the house but for the next several weeks do come by for a v...

Hawk

I have this resident hawk that every year knows when the Martins are to arrive and leave. He makes a living off of these birds. Last year I never have seen the birds as stressed out as they were and barely able to raise their young. Watching this year’s group I’ve noticed the Martins have adapted to...

Re: Too Much Heat

I've had Martins come around since 1979 and never had any luck trying to take care of the birds that left the nest early. I put three back in the house and dusted them. Don't think mites were the problem as they looked okay. This morning two were back out on the ground one dead and the other kind of...

Too Much Heat

Hi all, Never had a season like this one with these birds. The young ones keep coming out and I keep putting them back best I can. I think the heat is getting to these young ones. So far at least six have made the jump and they are at least another week and a half from being fully flyable. The adult...

Re: Louisiana!!!!!!

Hey Dave. Yeah I saw those bird reports. Those are more west of my location so must have been part of a group of a Texas flyway. It shouldn't be long now with the weather hitting 70 deg this weekend. Keep looking. I do.

Cheers,

Re: Question About Another Bird

David there is, at least last year, was a roost underneath the bridge on the South end of the lake. This year I've not heard the same. Not sure where they might be but they have in the past years always roosted under the causeway. Once went to watch them on the North end and was quite a site. The pa...

Re: Question About Another Bird

Too late for light to see colors but I'm beginning to think they are Martins. They fly by every afternoon about dusk one at a time and its difficult to get a good picture. If Martins, they must be young ones as they make no sounds. It's hard to get a good picture. They fly a straight line, I suppose...

Re: Question About Another Bird

Dave, Thanks for the reply...you answered my question along with some good info. I would think these are Tree Swallows that we have here. Don't see them a whole lot but since my Martin group left I have noticed these Swallows late in the afternoon, going to roost and at first I thought they were Mar...

Question About Another Bird

Down here in South Louisiana there is another smaller bird that looks like a Martin but I think it's a type
of Swallow. It has the same color pattern as a Martin. I was wondering if these birds also migrate to
South America with the Martins.

Re: Sad to see em leaving

Here in Covington, mine have done their thing about 2 weeks ago but still come around in the mornings. Not sure what's up with these visitations but I have my house closed up to keep sparrows out. Could be some want to get another nest started but it's not happening. I'm done for the year. I assume ...

Re: Can hawks make purple martins shun a house they used for years?

My experience to your question is every year I have, it seems, a resident hawk that after my birds first arrive and get established this hawk will take some. This year I know I lost three for sure. But these birds do not ever leave. They just adapt their tactics in dealing with this hawk by staying ...

Those That Come Out Too Early

I've been a landlord since 1979. There are always some youngsters that come out early. In the past I've never been able to help them other than try and put them back in the house. Again this year same problem as one has come out but I was able to put it back from house unit it came from. It's out ag...

Re: Louisiana scout reports

With this warm weather and southern winds no wonder. I just went ahead and put my house all the way up, still closed.
Mine normally come mid Feb., but in BR where I use to live I once saw them in late Jan.

Good luck.
