I'm so sorry that you have so many starlings and house sparrows. That seems very ominous to me. Although your Martins may fight and win the battle to build the nest, the sparrows and starlings are sneaky and they are lethal to eggs and babies. Before we started trapping, we would find eggs with litt...

We don't have that particular trap, but we have other traps. Three kinds to be exact. Never caught a blue bird, but we do catch house sparrows, starlings and the mocking birds get caught repeatedly. You would think the mocking birds would learn. But to answer your question. Not one bird has ever bee...

I'm glad you are enjoying the Kestrel. They are very beautiful. Unfortunately, Kestrels are Purple Martin enemies. More on the subject can be found in Kent Justus' article, "Diurnal Raptor Enemies of Purple Martins". A quote from the article: "The Merlin, Peregrine, and Prairie falcons pose the grea...

This brings up a question about owl guards that I've been pondering and I will start a new topic about it later when I have time. But for now, I really want to thank you for sharing this great idea. Besides our gourd rack, we have two Coates and one of them is exactly like your pictured one. Thank y...

Our Mocking Birds coexist quite well with our Martins. They don't compete for the same nesting sites, nor for the same food. They do share our yard quite well. Side note: My husband trained the Mockers to come to him when he calls them. It is a sight to see. He calls them while he puts out fruit on ...

We just ordered ours. I am looking forward to teaching our Martins how to catch flung crickets. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think I'd be excited about learning how to fling crickets!

Thanks for the flinging tips. I have a question about crickets. Do you get them live and then you freeze them for easy handling or do they come frozen? Last year we got our meal worms from the pet store. I remember how shocked I was when I found out we could get them by sizes small, medium, or large...

We tried tossing the food to the purple martins, over them, under them and away from them. They did not go for it at all. What was your tossing style? I'm so curious about how you got them to eat the crickets you tossed up. Amazing!

feeding martins during cold weather

I'm so glad we don't have any PMs yet. Last year we had some harsh cold wet weather for several days after the scouts arrived. We put scrambled eggs and meal worms in our brand new PM feeding station, but the PMs didn't eat anything at all. I guess it was too new and we didn't have time to train the...

Thank you all for a warm welcome and for the information about predator guards. We are moving the pole away from the fence and we are also installing a new pole with a wench. I'm not sure what my husband is going to do about the predator guard, but knowing him, he has a plan percolating! :win...

Funny Story

I have a funny story for you all. Last year I hosted a ladies group luncheon at our house. I overheard two ladies discussing our beautiful new and pristine white gourd house rack. The first lady asked why our bird feeder was so large. The second lady said it isn't a feeder. It is an art sculpture. I...

Welcome Jean ... I have a question for you! What kind of ground predator guard do you have for that gorgeous rack??? I don't see one in the picture and was curious what you use. :?: ... 8) I don't think we have a ground predator guard. We don't have much wildlife except for some snakes. We are in a...

....I'm curious to know how many martins did you have last year?? Thanks John! I don't remember exactly, although we do have a record of it somewhere. We have a total of 46 apartments in all with the gourdes and the 2 Coates metal houses. Last year we had about 80% occupancy and oodles of babies.

This is a fun topic! I gave my husband two houses for his birthday in year 2002. Here is one of the Coates houses, which is unmodified. The attached picture is the unmodified house. Last year he modified this Coates so that each nesting pair has two rooms. The picture of the modified house is showin...

Hi folks! This is a great forum and I'm excited to join you this year. We have our gourds up with fresh nesting material in them. All weekend I have been looking out the window hoping to see a few scouts returned. But I have not seen any yet. Last year, we didn't see any until early February. I can'...
