Bert and I think that's funny too.

By the way, we are still Martinless. Yesterday My mind played tricks on me and kept turning other birds into Martins. :x Maybe today we will see one for realz!

We still don't have any. It won't hurt my feelings if they wait until February. It's going to get cold and rainy this weekend and we all know what that means--no flying insects. :-(

Last year we had a Coopers Hawk that often visited at dusk when the Martins were gathering for the nightly slumber. We started standing guard whenever we could and when we saw a Cooper swooping in for the kill, we threw ice cubes toward it. It was a nightly ritual and we thwarted many attacks. The C...

How interesting. I learned something new about Purple Martins. We have been landlords for 14 years and never had glass in the nest. Thanks for sharing your glass experience.

When we got home from work yesterday, we spent some time watching the racks hoping to spot a returning Martin. I don't know if I have ever anticipated their return with so much excitement in my heart.

Pictures from last year

Hi folks,

While we dream of the Purple Martins coming home, here are a few pictures of last year's set up. This year will be the same.

The earliest our scouts have arrived to our house is January 19. Usually others in Texas get them a few days before we do. All week I've had my eye on this website watching for a Texas report. Bert has both of his beautiful gourd racks ready. We have 64 cavities and they are all furnished with clean...

We are ready and waiting in Sugar Land Texas

Hi Louise and gang! Bert got the gourd racks ready for the return of the Martins. It was a pretty day on Sunday and he was very happy with anticipation knowing they will be here soon. I've been checking this web site every day to see if there are any in Texas yet. Wishful thinking! But I'm glad they...

Don, if I would have parked on your side of the line of trees I would have seen you and introduced myself. Birders always recognize each other and share info. I was on other side leaning on my ford Explorer eating ice cream watching the show. Your movie is great! I drove around in the back area too ...

Huge roost at the Fountains shopping center in Stafford, TX

Hi all, We had a great nesting season in Sugar Land, TX. Lots of plump babies with no mites thanks to a little seven dust. There were hawk attacks, but that is beyond our control. Bert did a great job managing sparrows and starlings. He is a great PM landlord. We only have 7 chicks left in the gourd...

We have babies! movie attached

Last weekend Bert did a nest check and counted 202 eggs. Today he did a nest check and the count is 240 eggs and 38 young. I documented our nest check and posted it on youtube. Even though I held the camera vertically instead of horizontally, it came out pretty good anyway. For all of you who are wa...

I'm so sorry you lost your feathered friend. My hubby gets attached to them too and I kind of love him even more for being so protective of the birds. You are a good man.

Yay!! Now let's hope this mild winter continues. We have crickets in the freezer, just in case. And I'm crushing egg shells for the bed and breakfast trays. How sweet it is that our Purple Martin season has begun.

One of these days, Bert and I are going to take a little drive to visit you. We have 60 gourds with one or two unoccupied each year. And that seems like a lot to me. I think I will be blown away by your colony!

So happy to read these reports of returning PMs. I will start watching for ours to return. On one hand, I hope they are here ASAP, but then I worry about possible cold weather. Either way, I'm tickled pink to know they will be back any day now.
