Bob, Maybe it was a hawk thing; I thought that as well. Maybe it is a voice thing. However, when I heard him this morning he sounded really c o o l. Maybe there is something wrong with her. Anyway, I will keep you posted and I hope he finds a girl soon. I think he is very, very sweet. I love your hu...

Bob, Thank you for your response. It is very interesting what you observed with the "girls and the guys". To answer your question, the ASY male was here before. Actually, now thinking back I think this little subadult female was the one here Sunday night when they almost got snatched by the hawk. He...

First subadult female

Since there is no report for subadult females I thought I post it on the Forum that we have our first subadult female. Yesterday afternoon one of our ASY males broughjt in a cute little subadult female. He invited her into the Goliad house where they spent the night. However, she must have changed h...

I personally do, just to make sure that there is no bugs or mites in the nest. Some of the old nests are pretty messy at the end of the season, others are not that bad. I know there is landlords who also remove the entire old nest and then others leave the old nests in. I guess you need to see what ...

hen we first started John Barrow (our mentor) told us to put some nesting material in the gourds and he gave us some pine needles. The following year I ordered the pine straw and the corn fodder from the PMCA. I always order in the middle of December because it can take 3-4 weeks before it arrives. ...

Steve, Thank you for your information on the gourd rack; I will have Lynn take a look at it. I cannot even imagine how much work it is to protect your colonies, and your love and care for the martins is very obvious. It makes me feel good to know that there is people like you; it makes the world a b...

Snakebird, Thank you for your great post. We are one of the many people that had to witness a hawk attack and one of our birds being taking off the perch right in front of us. It was a Sharp-shinned Hawk. At that time we did not know what kind of hawk it was, but since he kept coming back and we cou...

Tigerpitt, Indeed, it seems that people have more hawk attacks this year; we did ourselves and since are "patrolling" every morning and every evening. Just like you, we did not have any problems the first 3 years, last year was our 4th year and we had an attack we could never figure out by what, but...

Steve, As always, great article and very helpful information. I always dremmel the inside of the Troyer gourds all the way to the bottom and also on the walls, trying to rough it up as much as I can. Then I put the nesting material in; I call it the "nesting material lasagne" since I do different la...

Birdy Girl, I am sorry to hear about the hawk; you must be very stressed having two encounters with him in such a short time. However, you were successful to distract him by clapping your hands. Obviously this hawk still responds to noise and you showing up. With that in mind, you should be able to ...

Hello FlaSpartan, I am so sorry to hear what happened to your ASY; we had the same experience 2 weeks ago. We saw the hawk snatch one of our first birds right of the perch in front of our eyes. I will never forget this picture or experience and that is why I can so understand how you feel. It is ver...

Sarah, I read your post reply with lots of interest. That you actually saw a change some ten years ago in the hawk's behavior is fascinating. We have had a lot of trouble with a Sharp-shinned hawk since the first martins came back. Never had a problem before (that we know off), and now this guy is n...

Good Morning, Thank you again for "being there for us" with your concern, comforting words and ideas  Bob, We do have a loud whistle to scare the hawk off and to possibly alert the martins, but we will defnitely get also an airhorn. Thank you. M.H.McCormick, The mirror sounds also like a good ...

The "Sharpie" was back

Tonight, Lynn and I were both outside and saw the sharp-shinned hawk sitting on the roof of a house across the canal. Totally different area than from where he usually comes from. He sat there for 30 minutes. Lynn thought he might be "full". I thought "he is going to come at some point". When the ma...

We had this happen here as well. It must be the young ones from last year the way they did not hesitate and went straight for that particular gourd and have been in there for more than a week now, defending it towards "newcomers". We had one of them named "Freckles" because he had all these little b...
