Re: House Sparrow problems

Hi Kelly; Usually HOSP nests are easy to differentiate from Martin nests. The HOSP will usually "fill" a compartment with grass, feathers, and any junk they can find. They usually shape their nest into a bowl shape. On the other hand the Martins usually build a very inconspicuous nest, sometimes bar...

Re: Why do I not have martins

Bird: Patience is the keyword. It took me 5 years of playing the Dawn Song continually during Martin season, before I attracted my first nesting pair. As they say, anything worth having is worth working for, and this goes double for being a Purple Martin Landlord. So hang in there, your patience wil...

Dead Martin Mystery ??

I have found two dead Martins in the last couple of days. One ASY male lying on the ground, wings open, with no visible signs of trauma, and one ASY female in a gourd, also with no visible signs of trauma.

Any ideas on a cause of death?

Besieged by Smaller Starlings !!

Count me in the group who believes that Starlings are evolving into a smaller size or sub-species. I had never had a breach of an SREH until last year when a Starling breached an Excluder II entrance. I was fortunate to find her still in the gourd when I lowered it one day, and she was dispatched. T...

Re: Storm damage in NE states & update

Hi Toy; Sorry to hear about your illness and the bad weather up there. You just can't seem to catch a break. I lucked out with the storms, just a big blow for a short time and then it moved on, no damage. When your luck finally turns around I think you are due to win the lottery. LOL. Hope you make ...

Re: I beleive I lost my Alpha Male Waldo.

Sorry to hear that Doug. I had the one show up on Monday, didn't see him Tuesday, and then saw one again on Wednesday, and not on Thursday. So I'm not sure if these are my birds or if they are passing through on their way to your site, or others to the North of me.

First ASY Male - Beaver County, Pa.

My first ASY male showed up today in a cold steady rain. He is a full 10 days earlier than my first arrival last year. He went right to an active compartment from last year so he knew where he was going. Hopefully the weather will turn nicer for him later in the week, that's the forecast. Best wishe...

Great map Stan. Interesting looking at the tract of land comprising the Appalachian mountains and how barren of Purple Martin activity those mountainous areas are. Thanks for posting.

Shelf Life of Freeze Dried Crickets & Meal Worms ??

Any thoughts out there on how long freeze dried crickets and meal worms retain their nutritional value? I have a lot of both left from last year and I hate to toss them if they will still be good for this upcoming season.

Thanks;

Re: Central PA end of season report....

Hi Toy; You certainly did the best you could for your Martins. You are overdue for a good break, hopefully it will come in the form of a great Martin season next year. Weather is a strange phenomenon. I seem to sit in a pocket here where a lot of the rain and bad storms miss us completely, passing e...

Re: Lawn mower

I always have a large following of Barn Swallows following me when I am mowing my big field behind the housing, it is a feeding frenzy. From time to time the Martins will join in on the action.

Re: 1 Nest to go

As usual Toy you are doing Yoeman's duty tending to your Martins. I agree with Buckeyefarmer, you are due some good luck with your Colony, hopefully it comes next season. Things are wrapping up over here, just a few visitors returning occasionally to check things out. I ended up taking just one to a...

Re: Fleglings

Mine usually return with the fledglings for a couple of weeks after they fledge. They are gone all day feeding, and return right at dusk. that usually amounts to a pretty good show as they all circle the housing and jockey for position entering the housing. The numbers slowly diminish as time goes b...

Re: Moisture Needs Of Fledges ??

Thanks for the well wishes Billie, and thanks for the advice Toy. I will try to feed him well and hopefully he will gain enough strength to join the others. Still a few to fledge so I have some time. If I can't get him going I will take him to the rehabber.

Thanks;

Moisture Needs Of Fledges ??

I am trying to strengthen a fledge I found on the ground unable to fly. He seems fully developed, wings and feathers all look good, he just can't maintain flight. I am feeding him crickets and meal worms soaked in water. My question is, is this enough moisture for him or do I need to supplement this...

Re: Egg shells for Martins

Mine love the egg shells taken off my bed & breakfast platform, and I am hoping it will help to train them to take supplemental feeding as well. So far I have had no luck with supplemental feeding, but they readily take the egg shells.
