Banded Female PM

06MAR2011 – Blue Skies – 69F I took some photos and to my surprise, a banded female is taking residence at my site . I did not see any marking on the band. Can anyone tell me more about this band? http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr289/BumBee2/PM%202011/IMG_8613.jpg http://i492.photobucket.com/alb...

I had two that came in last Tuesday evening and spent the night. I have
not see them in the past two evenings. I think they will be back once it
gets a little warmer. This has had happened before.

James,
You'll have to excuse us for having such cheap $20.00 boat winches and a
garage full of tools.

I did not intend to insult your intellect.

Good luck with your Purple Martins.

I have my boat winch with manual brake switch for the past eleven seasons. I never had to lubricate or
replace any part of it. Of course I can lift my 12 room PM house assembly with one hand. I also use a 3
braid, 3/8 inch poly rope.

How heavy of a PM housing system are winching up?

I watched the video, and I like it. I shoot a PCP Webley Raider that I bought from Pyramyd Air a while back. The only time I see how much air pressure is in the tank is when I hook up the manual hand pump to it. It is single shot and I have topped it with a BSA 3-12x40mm AO. It does the job I need. ...

I agree with Laverne to a certain point. I do not use this tactic when the martins are not around or a month or so before they arrive at my site. I use the glue trap for I can leave them in the compartment and I do not have to mess around with it, catch all the wasps that enters the cavity. I remove...

30JAN2011 Vern, I have had the same problem in my NBT and some in my PM housing. I use water/dish water detergent mixture to kill them before I will proceed to the removal of their nest. This would only happened when the PMs were not around. I use to seal all openings of my PM housing but the duct t...

If they like my new 12 rooms, I will have to remodel my old 12 rooms next year. Regarding my new
Tunnel SRE, I watched a couple of starlings try to get in but gave up rather quickly. I was a little
disappointed and glad at the same time.

Keep us posted on the progress of your site.

Emil,
Congrats..........In the past two years, I've been two weeks behind you.
I cannot hardly stand the excitement and the wait. I am also anxious whether they will accept
my new set up, specially my new 12 rooms with new entrances.

M,
Thank you. The inside finish of the 3 inch ABS pipe is very smooth.
It is a lot lighter than the schedule 40 PVC pipe.

There is no need for painting or adding any kind of finish to it. The aluminum
does have any galvanic reaction to it, in whick I like a lot.

21JAN2011 I agree with Emil. The thicker the entrance the better it works against the starlings. I have use 2 inch thick entrances for the past ten years. This year I have added 12 More rooms and all 12 will have my new entrances flush to entrance floor. My old 12 entrances had a built in floor that...

16JAN2011 – 62F – Raining I lined my new aluminum housing with cork, 5/32 thick for the roof and 3/32 for the walls. I found this in a roll at Hobby Lobby. I used 100% silicon as my adhesive. I found some at Lowes sold as kitchen shelf liner but were just too thin as an heat insulator. CORK The most...

05JAN2011 – 66F Cloudy I think the .080 inch thick walls on my pole makes them not as stiff as if it they would have a .125 inch thick walls. I know my pole will be okay at this length. I also think that even if I have to lower my PM housing a foot or two, the birds will still accept it. I am a litt...

04JAN2010 I shortened my 18 feet pole to 16 feet. I did not like the way it swayed after I doubled the load. What I did was mounted the old 12 rooms on to one pole and made 12 more rooms and mounted them on the second pole. It measures 12 feet from the ground to the bottom of the 12 rooms. If this s...
