Just One

Way up here in Pennsylvania I have only seen one so far. I put my feeders out after I spotted him and he comes back once a day as far as I can tell. We usually have quite a few so I have to think they are just late because of the weather. It has been quite cool up here so far.

Keep Your Chin Up Delma

Delma; C'mon now, keep your chin up. Afterall, sitting on the front porch drinking coffee and watching the Bluebirds or enjoying your garden, or fishing for bass and crappie, how bad can life be? Either one of those sounds pretty enjoyable to me and just when you don't expect it I imagine a Purple M...

Good News Doug

Doug; Glad to hear you were able to come up with the best solution for the Martins. I hope you can relax now in the knowledge that you are doing your best for them. As one of the very few in Beaver County trying to establish a colony I certainly appreciate your efforts. Hopefully these Martins will ...

What a Shame

Doug; That's a real shame, as hard as it is to draw Martins to our area you certainly don't need problems like that. What lake is that on, is it on one of the Hereford Manor lakes? I know they were talking about draining them. Whatever you decide, if you need any help let me know, I will be more tha...

Plastic Belly Decoy

Indiana Tom;
I am trying to attract a Tree Swallow pair to a Bluebird house I put up for them, but so far no luck. I am going to try that little trick, I will let you know how it works. Thanks for reminding me.

Good News

Toyin;
Glad to hear things are going well in North Central Pa. I have my housing closed off temporarily to deal with Tree Swallows and Bluebirds. I am following the recommended protocol, hope it works. Still haven't seen a Purle Martin, but you give me hope.

Special Breed

It must take a special breed of Martin and a special breed of landlord to deal with snowstorms in May. Obviously you ladies and your Martins are that special breed. I'm sure it is beautiful up there in Alberta, but I'm not sure I could deal with that weather. Here's wishing you both lots of Martins ...

Good You Are Seeing Martins

Doug; Good to hear you are seeing some Martins. At least we know they can find their way to Beaver County, I was beginning to wonder about that. I'm hoping some of them fly over my site on their way north. I have had to shut my housing down temporarily due to the Tree Swallow dilemna. I have erected...

Send Them North

linsue; Give those Martins a road map to Western Pennsylvania, the vacancy sign is out and the accomodations are free. Seriously, it is a shame that we can't re-distribute some Martins from areas like yours to areas where they are scarce, like where I am located. Hopefully your predicament is a good...

According to the Book

After having a pair of Tree Swallows showing immense interest in my Martin housing I have now done everything according to the book and am hoping everything works out. I placed a Bluebird box about 40-50 feet from my Martin House for the Tree Swallows, they immediately showed an interest. The follow...

Thanks For All The Good Advice

Thanks for all the good responses and advice. I just came in from following everyones advice. I took a Bluebird box, fastened it to about a 10 ft. piece of pipe and installed it about 40 ft. from my housing. I no sooner walked away from the project than the Tree Swallows were all over it, investigat...

Tree Swallow Diversion

I have a pair of Tree Swallows showing immense interest in two gourds which I had just installed below my 12 compartment house. I temporarily took the gourds down this morning and I intend to put up some diversionary housing for the Tree Swallows as this seems to be the recommended procedure. I was ...

Sparrows With Memories

Here's a side note to my recent post about Tree Swallows. I have had absolutely no problem with sparrows this year at all, even though there are an abundance of them around. Not one has tried to build a nest and they are showing absolutely no interest in my housing. I haven't even seen one land on t...

Tree Swallow Interest

A curious thing has happened to me. I am just starting my second season of trying to attract Martins. Last year, and up until today, I have just had a 12 compartment S&K house, and during this time I have had some passing interest from one or two tree swallows, at no time have any of them attempted ...

No Interest From Tree Swallows

I am in my second year of trying to establish a colony here in Western Pa., no luck yet, haven't even seen a Purple Martin, but I do have regular visits by a Tree Swallow for two years now. He circles my house, lands on it, peers in the compartments, and yet he has never attempted to build a nest in...

What a Shame

Mike; What a shame that the Martins in your area are going begging for housing and up here in my area we have trouble attracting Martins to perfectly good available housing, just the quirks of geography I guess. Too bad we can't redistribute and spread out the population a little. If any of them hap...
