Added perches all set to go

Postby Whippy » Sat Jan 13, 2018 7:13 pm

I added some perches to my gourd rack today, filled them with pine needles and some Sevin dust. It's early for them here in North Texas but, you never know. Added a couple of decoys as well. Maybe my pair from last year will be eager to return to their gourd.

Thought I'd share.

Are those rods made of Fiberglas?

Spidey,

Last year they were however, as they weathered, the fiberglass strands began to unravel. I replaced them with wooden dowels. I painted the dowels so they wouldn't stand out so much. The dowels being so inexpensive and easy to work with will allow me to change them out as needed. I ran the end of the dowel on my belt sander to create a flat surface. So when I put that on the rack, it is flush with the gourd arm so now it won't rotate or shift downward. I used 2 hose clamps to secure each of them. Materials for all of this was less than $15.00.

I like the way it looks. For me it would help keeps Hawks away from the actual goursds. Excellent choice on using wood.

I used Fiberglass in the past & didn't realize how bad the Fiberglass deteriorated if it wasn't painted each year.

I'd love to see a closeup of how you attached the perches. I have a similar setup and I've been wanting to add some perches.

I used wooden dowel rod and put it on my belt sander to flatten one side so it would be flush with the gourd arm. Then I got some hose clamps, two for each perch and tightened them down. The photo is one of many as I couldn't get it to focus in on the mount area. Hopefully it is clear enough for you to see how I did it.

Hey Whips I think we are all so excited to start enjoying another great season with our purple friends. I had 3 pair last year and also hope they are eager to get back to my back yard. Going crazy with anticipation ! Happy Martining to all from this Alabama bird brain as my wife calls me!
