Martin Colony History: 2002 -Coates metal houses- about 18 pairs
2005 - Added a gourd rack- many more pairs
2007 - Added another gourd rack, gave the Coates houses away
2008-2015 - Experimented with many gourds & a few racks (its a sickness) fledged over 200 chicks/year. Hubby keeps records, not me. :-)
2016 - 64 gourds and expect most will be occupied

I shared this in year 2010, and sharing again now. It is a slow motion movie I took when our colony was re-establishing in February 2010. We sold the gourd rack to a friend and now have a different set up. But the short movie is kind of wonderful if you live up North and need a Purple Martin fix while you wait for your colony to return. Here is the link to the short movie. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pCJDDiKI0Rg

Now that was pretty cool. I know it's slow motion but it looks to me those birds would be easy pickings for a hawk. Seems like it takes them a little longer to lite.
