I have baby Martin’s. For the first time in 22 years I have more than 1 pair. 2 pairs laid 11 eggs and all of them hatched this weekend.

I want to do everything I can to protect the youngsters and we’re forecasted for 90+ degrees for the next ten days here in west Michigan. Wasn’t sure if that could potentially be fatal for chicks that young so I did a little modification to the gourds that have nests. Sun shades made from 1/4” pvc sheeting. I saw how much the parents would come to the entrance and pant while they were incubating with temps only in the mid 80s. I have a bunch of extra troyer tunnels that I plan to swap out the round hole tunnels for soon. I was at the point where I’d try anything to attract Martin’s and offering a few round holes to the setup was a risk I was willing to take for the time being.

Let me know what you guys and gals think.

.... Wow,,, That is good news... 22 years is a long time to wait for that first pair... I know the feeling, I got my first pair last year after a lot of trying and changing things up every few years.. Seems like it took forever.. Got one pair again this year with eggs now, and a single male has showed up without a mate.. He’s content to hang around a watch the other pair.

Martin Colony History: Started with Amish copy of Trendsetter 12 room house, added Trio Grandpa with expanded rooms, and North Star 8. Taking Trendsetter down this spring and adding gourd rack.

You do have a predictor guard, right? I have a pair after six years so I know a bit of your pain. They are due to hatch in the next few days.
