During a nest check this morning I found a chick with a ruptured air sac (see photo). He was fine last night. A ruptured air sac is an accumulation of air under the skin. It looks like an overinflated balloon & affects the respiratory system. It can be fatal if it doesn't deflate. Some will deflate & heal on their own, while others will not. There is a procedure vets can do. Thankfully a few hours later & the sac is almost back to normal size on it's own.

- Martin Colony History: The 1972 St. Agnes flood wiped out all the Martins in my area. One day, in 1997-98, 5 or 6 Martins landed on the power wires crossing my back yard. I had no house for them. They kept coming back day after day. We got a martin house a few weeks later & they have been coming back every year since. I average 12-15 pair per year.
