What should be the dimensions of a nest try ? length, width, thickness. Should they be flush with hole if full length of compartment?

I have a couple T 14's and the trays slide all the way to the back and I made the side and back walls of the tray tall enough the almost reach the top of the cavity. I remember someone on here had some short ones and had nestlings that would get scared and climb or jump over the back of the tray as he was sliding them back in. I cut the floors a little short and cut an angle on the front edge just to ensure they don't interfere at all with the entrance, my entrances are almost flush. If your entrances are an inch or so above the floor that would not be necessary.
