Conservation Sites
- Wisconsin Bird Conservation Initiative
- Most Purple Martin landlords are well aware that European Starlings and House Sparrows compete strongly for nest compartments, and left unchecked, can severely reduce the productivity of a martin colony. These two non-native species also compete with native species that use natural cavities for nesting, and are implicated in declines of some species like the Red-headed Woodpecker. To learn more about the impact of starlings and house sparrows on native species, The Wisconsin Bird Initiative is conducting the Cavity Nesters Project. Volunteer observers are needed to monitor natural cavities, nest boxes and houses and record interactions between native species and their non-native competitors. This is an excellent opportunity for Purple Martin landlords to help conserve martins and other native species by contributing to scientific knowledge.

- The
Peregrine Fund
- Welcome to The Peregrine Fund, an organization
founded in 1970 by Tom Cade who was then a Professor of Ornithology at
Cornell University. The Peregrine Fund developed naturally from the shared
concern of students and associates that the Peregrine Falcon might go
extinct in the wild if nothing was done. Our initial work was to learn
how to breed falcons in captivity, with the idea the young could be released
in the wild to re-establish the Peregrine in the eastern United States
where it was already gone and to bolster the greatly diminished western
populations. Our name came from a financial account at the Cornell Laboratory
of Ornithology -- the peregrine fund account. In 1984, we consolidated
our Cornell facility and our Ft. Collins, Colorado facility to our current
location in Boise, Idaho.
