Purple Martin Festival

General Comments: Eighth grade students from Harrington Middle School will teach the public about purple martins. The students will also lead \"field trips\" to our colony located in the front of our school.

MartinFest 2008, Finger TN

General Comments: MartinFest 2008: The 11th Annual MartinFest event will be held on June 20 & 21 at the Victor Stoll Family Farm, 494 Sweet Lips Road, Finger, TN 38334. Friday is Vendor’s Day, with martin and birding products available for purchase. Saturday’s traditional activities include a barbecue lunch, door prizes, raffle prizes, and speakers. The cost is $5 per person for Vendor’s Day only, and $10 per person for MartinFest day, which covers meals and facilities. Children 12 and under admitted free of charge. Buckeye Martinfest

Directions: Off of I-71, 10 Miles South of Columbus,exit Rt665 west. Follow Rt665 through Darbydale, Past the Canoe Livery, across Darby Creek, to Possum Run Road. Turn Rt and travel apporx. 1 mile to Boyd Road. Turn left, to third house. Address is 5650.

General Comments: This is the first of what we hope will be many years of an Ohio Purple Martin Get together. The goal is to have the event hosted in a different city each year for variety and to reduce the distances participants will have to drive each year. We will feature several highly knowledegable speakers, nest cams, and hands on learing experiences. A federally licensed bird bander will also be on site to band young Martins. A small fee is requested to defray the cost of the event. Lunch, refreshments and door prizes will be provided. Each guest is requested to bring a chair and possibly a dessert item for the lunch. Please RSVP if attending so the appropriate accomodations can be made. Primitive camping is available on site.

6th Annual Minnesota Martinfest

Directions: Directions from North: 35E going south, take Hwy 97 (exit 129) & turn right, take first left (frontage road) W. Freeway Drive (turns into 20th), turn left on 80th St. E., approx. 2 miles to Farnharm, turn left and left again on 173rd and arrive at 5095. Directions from South: 35E going north, take Cty. General Comments: This years event is our 6th year of hosting the Minnesota Martinfest. Our event is held at a new host location each year, encouraging various regions of Minnesota purple martin enthusiasts to participate without having to drive long distances. We pride ourselves in offering a variety of knowledegable speakers, small group sessions with hands-on learning, and this year will have federal licensed bird banders\' actually band young martins. It\'s really a full day of fun for all members of the family.

Part II - Outdoor workshop; nest checks and banding

Directions: Rt 537 in Colts Neck to Monmouth County Park\'s Dorbrook Recreation Area

General Comments: Part II of a two part event. At this session we will see the things we learned in Part I\'s classroom session from April 6th. This colony has approximately 32 breeding pairs of martins. We will lower the housing, do nest checks, nest replacements and band all the nestlings over 10 days old. Registration with the park system is required and a small fee will be charged. Refreshements will be served. Kids love this event and will be able to hold young martins while we do nest replacements and band them. Whether you are a martin landlord \"wannabe\" or just interested in birds, this is for you.

FOURTEENTH ANNUAL PURPLE MARTIN FIELD DAY

Directions: General directions: From the Zion Crossroads Exit of Interstate 64, go north on Rt. 15 for about four miles; turn right (east) on East Jack Jouette Road and follow the signs to the Field Day site. From points north: Follow Rt. 15 several miles south from Gordonsville, about two miles south of Boswell’s Tavern; turn left (east) on East Jack Jouette Road and follow the signs to the Field Day site. From Louisa: Take Rt. 22 west; turn left (south) on Rt. 613 (Poindexter Road); turn right on Rt. 695 (Hamilton Rd.) and follow the signs to the Field Day site. General Comments: On Saturday, June 21, 2008, the Fourteenth Annual Purple Martin Field Day will be held at the farm of Mrs. Merle D. Wood and Mr. Lance D. Wood in Central Virginia (about 100 miles south and west of Washington, D.C.; about 40 miles west of Richmond, VA; and about 20 miles east of Charlottesville, VA). In recent years, well over 100 Purple Martin enthusiasts (on average) attend each annual event, which is enjoyed by all. Any person interested in establishing, restoring, or expanding a Purple Martin Colony is invited to learn about and see in operation the most up-to-date and effective techniques and technology available for successful Purple Martin stewardship and management, as recommended by the Purple Martin Conservation Association. It is difficult to establish and maintain a healthy Purple Martin colony without using the techniques explained and demonstrated at this Field Day, because of the many challenges and difficulties that beset Purple Martin colonies. This event will show you how the Wood family has overcome those difficulties, and expanded their Purple Martin colony from four pairs of Purple Martins in 1992 to approximately 108 nesting pairs last year (2007). Topics to be covered include: * how to establish and increase a colony of Purple Martins; * advantages and disadvantages of different types of martin housing; * how to protect Martins from starlings, House Sparrows, owls, climbing snakes, raccoons, etc.; * adding the recently-developed starling-resistant entrance holes to martin gourds and houses; * how to protect martin housing from windstorms and other hazards; * how to grow and process purple martin nesting gourds; * life history of Purple Martins; etc. The featured speaker, Mr. Lance D. Wood, is an expert on Purple Martin colonies who has published several articles on the subject. Field Day events will begin at 9:30 a.m. and last about two hours, followed by an optional discussion on Bluebirds and Tree Swallows, and a short nesting box trail tour, including nesting boxes for bluebirds, tree swallows, kestrels, barn owls, etc. The Field Day event is free, but voluntary donations will be appreciated to help defray costs. The hosts request that guests do not bring pets. Each guest should bring a lawn chair if feasible, because on-site seating is limited.

GHAPMA Annual Meeting

General Comments: We will have our annual meeting on January 30, 2008 at 7 pm at Cy-Fair College in room 152 in the College Center. Gary Clark, Instructional Dean and Contributor to the Houston Chronicle, will be our guest speaker. He writes the “Wonders of Nature” column for the Houston Chronicle. The title of his presentation is “Behind the scenes with a nature columnist.” Please bring whatever new innovations you may be working on to share with the group!
