- July 16, 2008 The Martins left today while I was at work. It was
really quiet around the house today. I'll miss the mornings of chatter
by the Martins.
I started with one 12 compartment house six years ago. Two years ago,
another house was put up. We started with 4 birds. Now there are too
many to count.
I wish there could be more publicity about the birds. More people
would like them, if they only knew how great these birds are at eating insects.

- 2008 will be my 4th yr as a Landlord. Had 2 pair my 1st yr. Have added more housing every year and been maxing out every year. Looks like I am going to have 17 pair this year. The past 3 years I have fledged over 90%. I experiment a lot and always learning. Believe in large cavities, durable housing, and crescent entrences for SREH.

- I have 36 goards on poles I manufactured myself. I started in approximately 1994. I had a several friends who introduced me to purple martins and I got hooked. I don't really understand why, but the area I live is abundant with purple martins. The first year I started my colony, I had about 10-12 nesting pair. It has grown every year since. I have had several people stop by and ask about them and I answer the questions I can, and then refer them to your web site. I also raise goards, which I usually give to people wanting to get started.

- I have had Martins for over 10 years and have had upwards of 30 nesting pairs a season. I started as a teenager and my Father continued while I was off serving my country in the military. I moved back home and bought a house next to the on I grew up in and have expanded the colony to my backyard. We love to sit in the morning and evening watching and listening to the Martins. My children are active participants in the care and maintenance of our colony. I would take great pleasure in helping any new landlord get started with their first colony.

- I have been a landlord for about 5 yrs. now and have enjoyed every minute of it. I had up 48 natural gourds last yr. with 29 pair of martins that nested successfully and had 140 fledglings. I would call that a pretty successful breeding season. I believe that I would love to help other landlords get started and be very successful and keep this trend going.

- I guess the 3rd year was the charm in getting martins!! Finally, have a pair nesting and possibly more. I can't tell just yet. I did a nest check about 1 week after nest building. The martins seemed leary and I was afraid I had scared them away. They are still here and I have been doing walk unders for the last few days. Plan to do a nest check tomorrow to make sure nest competitors aren't building. Would love to have a mentor to coach me in my firsts in being a martin landlord. How exciting this is!! Even my husband and daughter are becoming interested!

- About five years ago, my wife and I bought a home. The home came with an established martin colony (about 10 gourds on a 150 ft. pole). About two years ago I replaced the gourds (rotting) with plastic gourds. The martins have not been back. My plans are to install a new colony away from the existing pole. I want to do this right. Can someone assist me with the construction. I'm not sure I understand how the vertical thing works.
