  • I started my colony in 2008 with one pair and two lone males. The pair fledged 4 young and in 2009 all 4 of the adults have returned and the subs are starting to arrive as well. I see a lot of empty houses in my area and several more that have been overrun with sparrows. Its a shame that more landlords don\'t take a more active role in protecting the animals they are trying to attract. If anyone needs help in getting started or in better maintaining what they have, please contact me.

  • I have 2 poles with 6 natural gourds each. This year I'm adding a third. This year there are about 7 pairs of adults with about 24 fledglings. My first pole was up about 3 years before we actually had martins come to nest. Last year we added the second, and this year the third.

  • I offer my martins both wood housing and natural gourds and find that they like both. Last season my colony was able to raise about 150 babies. I actively trap starlings and sparrows all year long.

  • This is the third year with housing up, and have not done much to attract except errect 12 "room" metal house. This year I have 5 or more birds that I am trying to decide if they are martins. It appears that one is a mature male, and the other young males or females. The birds look like martins, except in flight the tails are not always forked. But when roosting, they do look forked. They are not bluebirds, sparrows or starlings, but may be tree swallows. How do I know that I have martins? Thank you.

  • This is our first year as land lords. We have been trying to attract Martins for about 4 weeks now. We have only had Sparrows. We lowered the houses, took out the beginings of Sparrow nests, then raise the houses again. This appeared to work as we got our first two pairs of Martins just the day after that. But then Sparrows came to the houses again, and the Martins seem to have left. We have been playing the "Dawn Song" each morning, and we have Purple Martin decoys on the houses. We can see the Martins hunting in our area, as neighbors have established coloneys. But I get the impression that they just put their houses up, and got birds. They got lucky and don't really watch to see what's living in the houses they put up. We on the other hand want Martins, and we want to be good landlords. We have housing for 48 pairs of birds right now...and all appartments are empty. What are we doing wrong?

  • I have housing that was left by the previous owner here. She was an elderly lady and couldn't clean out the houses. The colony left and I've cleaned them out trying to attract martins back to this site. Not had any luck so far. MARK HARPER

  • This will be my second year trying to start a colony at our new home. I have a converted Trio style house and an eight gourd rack of natural gourds. Our house is located on the far eastern side of a ten acre field. I have my houses set up at the northwest corner so I can watch from the front porch. I also have a homemade T-14 type house ready to put up, but I have not done it yet because I am too lazy to get the pole fixed up ala Chuck Abare instructions. I read the forum pages every night and try to do what is suggested. I have a neighboring colony within 300 yards on both the north and south side of my property. Also I am fortunate to have Jim Jones living just a few miles away. I need all the help I can get.
