- I don't have an active colony, but study and manage 150+ pairs at 10 bridge sites in Sacramento. I am interested in recruiting someone with the time and interest to erect and manage housing near one of these sites to attract martins, which have seldom or never used housing in the past in California. Developing a tradition of using housing would be a substantial contribution to martin conservation in California. The species is recognized as a species of special concern because of substantial population declines, due to starling competition and habitat decline. I am also willing to assist prospective landlords in other areas by providing information on timing of nesting activities, strategies for attracting martins, and other activities.

- Family members in Illinois and Louisiana have long had colonies, and I was always eager to establish one. Until I found this website, I had assumed that purple martin colonies were not possible in California and I let the idea slide. Is there purple martin activity in Marin county, and is it even remotely possible to establish a colony here?

- When i lived in North Alabama I had an average of about 100 martins. Four years ago I moved to northern California and since that time I have not even seen a martin. I put upa a few gourds, but that has not attracted any birds. I have been told that i live too far north for the purple martin, but there are reports of martins in Sacramento. The problem here is that my home is approximately 2 hours northwest located in the mountains east of Santa Rosa, CA. Any suggestions would be appreciated!!

- Had a colony in Houston Texas but moved to California. Do not know if martins come this far in California or not. I would appreciate any help getting another colony started as it really broke my heart to leave my colony in Houston. Thank you in advance.
