  • I started my colony in 2008 with one pair and two lone males. The pair fledged 4 young and in 2009 all 4 of the adults have returned and the subs are starting to arrive as well. I see a lot of empty houses in my area and several more that have been overrun with sparrows. Its a shame that more landlords don\'t take a more active role in protecting the animals they are trying to attract. If anyone needs help in getting started or in better maintaining what they have, please contact me.

  • I have been building my martin colony since 1991. We have moved three different times and I was able to establish a colony at each location. Our latest location has been our largest. We have 64 compartments ranging from aluminum housing to plastic gourds and had them half full this year. This year we added a nest camera and really enjoyed it. Should anyone need any assistance or have any question, I would be happy to help in any way possible. Good Luck, Mike

  • I currently have a Trio Castle, modified; a Coates Waters Edge; Supergourds. I have been around colonies my whole life, and have been a landlord personally for 7 years and seen just about everything that can go right or wrong for colonies in this area. If you are having trouble attracting martins to your site or have had problems with an established site, contact me and I will help if I can.

  • We live near two lakes and enjoy watching eagles nesting there from a distance. There are flocks of pelicans by the hundreds and geese by the thousands. These site, although majestic are not nearly as fun as hosting a colony of purple martins in your own back (or in our case) front yard. Its almost like there part of the family. We are putting up a second house.

  • I am only a second year landlord, but I was fortunate enough to purchase a home in 1999 with existing houses and an established colony. I had a successful 2000 season and learned quite a bit, both from experience and research. I would love to help any first time landlords get started! I can answer questions, share my own pit falls from last year and direct you to great resources for products and information. Feel free to email me anytime and I will get back with you as soon as I can.

  • Put up a standard Martin house purchased at Lowes last spring. Was (and still is) enhabited by sparrows within a few days. 2 of the holes have nests in them. What should i do to get ready for next year?

  • Just moved and have 2 acres. I think we have a great spot that is fairly open and next to a vegetable garden site. We do have quite a few trees in the yard, but not extremely close to this area. Just bought a house yesterday at the home and gardent show. Really excited about the prospect of getting Martins started at my home! Have wanted to do this for years, but did not have the location for it previously. Would welcome any tips on this, especially when to open the house, i.e. when do the younger Martins usually hit this area.

  • We just put up our house and are working on shewing away the sparrows. Sounds like we have a long road ahead of us to get our colony established.

  • We have four breeding (?) pairs using our housing, and I keep running the sparrows out of the other side. However, none of the martins has yet to even begin building a nest, although they\'ve been here for a good two weeks now. How long before they decide to get serious?

  • First timer- Built my own martin house with 12 holes- seen 1 martin checking out the house tuesday the 29th, as of today no martins have been back. The sparrows have been there every morning, trying to get rid of them. Maybe within the next week martins will arrive.

  • April 2, 2004 - We have just put up 2 martin houses in our back yard. We live near an open pasture (it is right behind our back yard) My neighbor to the north has a martin house, but I don't know if it is well tended. I am chasing out the sparrows, who were very excited about finding the houses, and hoping the martins will come soon.

  • Hello, We are real new newbies Thought we could put up a house and presto! PM! We have a lot of sparrows. Have learned all we know from this sight in the last few days. We have rec. a nice e-mail from a posting about help w/sparrows & starlings. In the process of making a fake martin trap at his suggestion. We always thought that we had PMs here but now we think it has always been barn swallows. Any helpful suggestions would be appreciated. We are totally hooked and will NOT ever give up doing whatever we can to attract and keep PM. God bless!! Sharon & Jack

  • This year we put up our first martin house, and have yet to attract anything but sparrows. Daily (or every other day) we clean out the sparrow nests from the boxes. Any ideas of how we can attract the martins? We are anxious to get them here! Also, any ideas of discouraging the sparrows? Thanks.

  • Have been trying to attract martins for four years. I have a TG-12 with 4 large natural gourds. Site is bordered in the back by thick woods but house is at least 40 feet away and rises to 19 feet to offset trees. There are several active colonies in the immediate area. I have tried everything I have seen recommended on the Forum, all to no avail.

  • Hi, I would just like someone local to talk martins with. While I don't have martins yet, I have put up my house in a good location and have hung four homemade PCV houses from the porch of the martin house. I also have the dawnsong and daytime chatter cd's. And will find a way to offer eggshells in the near future. Mostly I feel pretty good about my setup and there is an active colony within 1/4 mile. So mostly its just COME ON SPRING!

  • I've had my Purple Martin house up 2 years. The first year I had quite a few visiting Purple Martins. One Martin kept coming back during the day and staying most of the day. Last year, a single Martin (I'm thinking the same one) visited our house until a couple of European Starlings ran him off. I tried running them off -- they even layed an egg in the house. I cleaned it out each day. We shot sparrows when they would try to nest. We put up an owl guard and plastic pipe around the bottom of the pole to fend off predators. Help!
