  • Have been a martin landlord on and off for the past 34 years. Recently established a colony in Walkersville, MD. Have extensive knowledge of site factors that martins do or do not like. Some sites are excellent choices for a colony and others should just take housing down and prevent nesting of starlings and sparrows. I have a combination of metal, wooden, and gourd housing. I would be pleased to answer questions or help establish colonies. Martins need our help. I am also a veterinarian and may help with medical issues.

  • It took us almost 9 years to start an active colony. We would not have been able to attract and have them nest if we did not try something new each year and/or correct things that we may have been doing wrong. Hopefully, I will be able to help someone increase their odds from the experience of our trial and error.

  • I have installed a gourd house system. I also have the dawn song CD that I am playing, although it is still early for the scouts in our area. Photos of the houses can be seen at: http://www.bumblebeeblog.com/2008/03/02/for-rent-purple-martin-houses/ I have inquired with people who live nearby who have purple martin houses, but they tell me that they have never had them. I was very disappointed to hear this and am now worried that the houses will go empty! We have successfully attracted bluebirds. I\'m interested in a purple martin mentor in order to maximize my changes for attracting and then, of course, making sure I\'m being a good landlord. Thanks! Robin

  • I have 2 pairs of bluebirds. One pair has raised 3 broods. I ordered natural gourds and put them up this year for Purple Martins. Finally young adult martins showed up this month but they do not come near the gourds. They fly around the neighborhood though. They are too large to be tree swallows. I would like a mentor.

  • I have been putting up our house for about 10 years. I made the mistake of locating it too close to a pine tree. Thanks to Hurricane Isabelle, the tree is no longer there. Last year I had a pair of martins start building a nest, but they deserted it after a few days. This year a pair have been occupying the house for almost a week. They are there early in the morning when I leave for work and I have seen them at 3 and around 5 on two different afternoons. I never see them come to the house at dark. Are they staying or just teasing me?

  • Recently purchased a beach house (Pelican's Perch) on North Carolina's Outer Banks near Corova. Access is 4WD only and 7.5 miles up the beach from the paved road in Carolla. Our neighbors to the south of us have two active PM houses with many birds. Being a PM landlord always interested me and this beach setting got me motivated. Spring of 2005, Kathy, Christine and I erected two houses (last week in April) and immediately had martins peeping in and entering the houses. We all live in Maryland so we are unable to see our martins on a regular basis. This just kills me, but I know they will be an interesting addition to our cottage for our renter's from April - July. Our PM houses sit approx. 30 feet from our hot tub and pool. Great way to view the birds and we love hearing their soft chirping sounds, gliding and soaring in the early moring beach sunlight. Evenings find the birds swooping down near the eves of our roof on the top deck, gathering dragonflys and nats, only a few feet away. Without sounding like an advertisement, our house sleeps 15 and is a great place to spend a week on a remote Atlantic ocean beach in the midst of many purple martins. Hope to hook up with other landlords in NC Thanks and good luck, Brent Look us up online.

  • Read up on PMs for years. Recently moved into new home on 1.4 acres in the country. Purchased a Coates 8 room Suite PM house with Heavy Duty Telescoping pole. Pole installed on May 2, 2005 and house installed on May 3, 2005. I know it's late but this spring has been so cold. Barn Swallows just started appearing en masse these past few days. My home is 4 miles north of Westminster, 2 miles south of Manchester Maryland. We're off of State Road 27. I haven't seen any other PM housing in my area, but I know they have to be around; it's ideal habitat for them. I'd like a mentor who might be able to use their experience to give me advice and also to check out my PM house. For next year I think I'll be adding a gourd rack next to the Coates Suite house. Also, just joined the PMCA today. Thanks, Ken

  • I put up a house last year in June and immediately got a pair of martins. They built a nest and seemed very happy for a few weeks. Then, they disapeared. After a few days with no sign of them I checked the house. There was a nest with eggs in it, but the Martins never returned. Could it have been an owl or hawk? If so, how do I prevent this from happening this year. So far (2005) we have Martins in our neighborhood, they are in our backyard every evening, but they have yet to make a home in our birdhouse.

  • I have had martins for over 10 years until last year when we converted our aluminum house to all crescents. When the martins came back last spring they could not enter and eventually abandoned the house. So as a result we lost the colony last year and don't have one this year. We are trying to start again and appreciate any help.

  • I have erected a T14 house, but only a total of 6 units. the house is oriented East and West. I did not construct the smaller side units. I am in the process of adding hanging gourds to the unit. I live really close to the Interstate and I am afraid the noise and traffic might be keeping them away. I have saw martins around the house a few times over the years but no takers. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

PAUL HOLCOMB

  • Just bought a Deluxe Gourd Rack with 12 SREH Crescent SuperGourds, Owl Guards and Predator Pole Guard. I thought I had a great site, (5 1/2 acres, 5 acres ex-turf farm, 1/2 acres wood in back, spring, boarders 20 acres wooded wetlands) but after placing my order I kept on reading and... now I'm not so sure. I'm only 1/4 mile from the ridge and it's pretty windy here. I was thinking about setting up the martin housing near the woods along the grass line 200-300 feet (I only cut 2-2 1/2 acres) from the house, but I've read you need to stay within 120 feet of the house and 40 feet from the woods. I only bought one 12 gourd rack but... I read multiple poles are best. There may, just possibly, be more to being a marlin landlord than I thought. More information available than I can digest. Maybe a mentor would be a good idea?
