  • I first started trying to get martins 35 years ago and then gave up after about five years of trying. (I gave my Trio 24 to a friend.) Then we moved to Forest Lake and I got three pair the first year (3 yrs ago). My third year here, I got 11 pair with, at the peak last summer (2009), 41 chicks and eggs. I won\'t say how many of those were lost to the extremely cold summer we had, especially around the 4th of July. If I can help you in any way, please let me know. • Anyone in the East North Dakota Region or Northwest Minnesota Region who is interested in the conservation of Purple Martins, please feel free to contact me. This region has serious site completion from the English House Sparrow and European Starling and constraint control is necessary for a successful Purple Martin site.

  • In the past I have maintained a colony of up to 13 pairs. I moved back to the area and I am now trying to attract Martins again. I have helped several people in the central MN area attract, rescue, and maintain their colonies. My recent success story is a colony in St. Cloud that went from 4 birds last year to 24 birds and counting! I am willing to travel and answer any questions that landlords or propesctive landlords may have. I will also analyze sites to determine placement of housing within the yard, etc.

DAVE & PAMELA KUNZE
  • Hutchinson, MN
  • My wife and I had 4 year old site with up to 13 nesting pairs in a super gourd rack and a T-14 before we moved to a new home in Hutchinson last year. (So - we are starting over in the spring of 2003.) We have taught a Purple Martin class and have mentored 3 beginning landlords. We have successfully managed 2 nesting pairs of Tree Swallows in the same yard and feed crickets during cold spells. We are very excited about starting over this spring and are also hoping to work with inexperienced landlords or hopefuls who are having trouble attracting or retaining PM's. May be able to travel approximately 70 miles or so to meet you, or to view your site.

  • Last year, 2009, was my 44th year as a martin landlord. I have designed and built all of my martin houses, experimenting with nest room sizes and entrances throughout the years. I have helped several friends and relatives get started with and managing martin colonies. I have designed and built a parallelogram pivot system post (ppsp) that I have used in our yard since l968. 216 sets of plans for this post have been sold to people living in 31 states plus five provinces of Canada. I am a member of the Purple Martin Working Group of Minnesota and enjoy working with people and martins.

  • I have had my martin housing up since 1999. I received my active landlord status in 2002 when I had two nesting pairs. I have three different types of martin housing. A Nature House TG-12 aluminum house converted to 6-units with double-size compartments, a homemade 2” stainless steel square pole gourdrack equipped with 18-SuperGourds, and a Troyer T-14 wood house with 14 11” deep compartments, built to designer Andrew Troyer spec’s. The T-14 is mounted on my 4x4" square aluminum pole, and the house is lowered and raised by a Warn Works? model 1700 12 volt DC electric winch with self-locking gear train dynamic braking system. I have converted all housing round holes to adjustable crescent hole. The adjustable doors are a design made by Ron Seekamp of Fridley, MN. In my efforts to keep the housing cooler during hot weather, I’ve experimented with different types of insulating coatings. I’ve found that the most beneficial and durable coating is a product made by Mascoat Products, named WeatherBloc? insulating coating. This product keeps the sun’s radiant heat from heating up the outside surfaces of metal, wood , and plastic. In my first 6-years of landlordship, my martins have an average success rate of 94%. I attribute some of this success to providing housing that stays cool while featherless young are in the nest. If you would like more information on how-to do any of the mentioned housing upgrades, please feel free to send me a email.

Have 25 acres on shore of 400 acre lake. Good spot on empty lot next to house, no trees and elevated ground, pond attached to lot. Have seen very few PM in Mn. in last few years. Fishing resorts up north are even at a loss as to what happened to them. Have plans for T14 house. Asking for suggestions... pole, round vs cresent..etc.

  • This Sunday May 1st, 2005 I put up a new 12 room (large) Martin House, painted it white on a 12 foot 4X4 Cedar timber. It is about 50 feet from my lakeshore (Lake Ada) and about 30+ feet away from the nearest trees. There are several large oaks nearby but it is a central location. I only get up to the lake on weekends so I'll have to manage it on my visits. When should I expect Martins to check it out? I am in Central Minnesota 30 Miles north of Brainerd. My neighbor has a house and got Martins the first year he put his up. However, he did not clean it out and does not "manage" it against swallows, sparrows, etc. He has not had Martins for about 5 years. His house is also by trees. Any input w/b appreciated. Email or phone works best.

  • My wife and I purchased a metal Martin house - 12 rooms - away from trees and about 30 feet from the house. We put up the house mid August of 2004. Several days later, we had PM visitors 3 days in a row in late afternoon, early evening. In Sept. I closed the unit and now waiting. I am hoping to contact a mentor in my local area to assist in the development of my first colony. Thanks, Pete and Elise

  • My father and brother have active colonies in Michigan and Florida respectively. I just purchased a 24 gourd housing with pole. I plan on raising it up the first week in May for the subadults that are predicted to show up then thru mid June. I am not aware of any PM enthusiasts in my area and trying to locate someone that could share some helpful info with me.
