  • I am looking forward to my 8th year of raising martins in Fremont, Nebraska. After building my colony up to 18 pair of nesting martins, we decided to move to a new house 1/4 south of the old place. I was thrilled to see my new location immediately accepted by 11 pair and by season\'s end, we successfully fledged 48 babies. I have two Lone Star brand houses and am contemplating installing a third house (or a couple extra stories on an existing house) this year. I eagerly await late March or early April each year when my first birds usually arrive. 2009 Update. I have two Lonestar brand houses with a total of 26 nesting compartments. Last night's nest check showed a total of 16 active nests with a total of 75 eggs/chicks. I have one pair of sparrows seemingly hell-bent on occupying two of the nest boxes so I've been making their lives miserable by removing the nests on a weekly basis. I would be happy to assist anybody who is interested in attracting purple martins!

  • My very first year (2002) I had 8 natureline gourds with two breeding pairs that fledged 8. Second year (2003) had 6 breeding pairs and fledged 22. Third spring (2004) I made another rack system with 8 additional natureline gourds, incredibly 12 breeding pairs fledged 43. I did not keep track of the SY or ASY pairs I really wished I had. I will keep track this year. My colony site is about 150 yards from my grandfathers very active site who has helped me start my colony. I have a lot of video footage with excellent sounds! I highly recomend supergourds or natureline goards they really attract martins and they have great success with the hatch. We are patiently waiting for their return!

  • I have an informal group of PM Landlords who communicate, and I have one preseason meeting a year at my house. I have mentored several PM Landlords, most of whom have been successful. I currently manage 2 sites each with aluminum housing and SuperGourds. 1999 season I had 13 pairs total, fledging 38.

  • First timer- Built my own martin house with 12 holes- seen 1 martin checking out the house tuesday the 29th, as of today no martins have been back. The sparrows have been there every morning, trying to get rid of them. Maybe within the next week martins will arrive.
