- We have 4 different types of PM houses ~20-25 feet apart on bulkheading overlooking the bay. We have had ~6-12 breeding pairs each year for the past 4 years, with plenty of juvenile activity as well. You actually know the day in early April when the first males show up...it is their SONG that fills the air!

- I moved to my home on Cayuga Lake in 1999. As far as I know, this colony has been coming here well before me. There are two houses that are located 50 to 60 foot off shore. One in very poor repair (missing the second floor and leaning over a bit) that we have just taken down today to replace. The other (also two stories) is about 15 to 20 feet away and appears to be ok for the moment but probably needs work. We plan to build a new house and install the poll and house this week if at all possible. We will be able to use this site and the house we have to make a new one. I assume that we\'ll use untreated plywood with no internal coatings. But...this is the reason for my email. We want to be sure of doing this as best we can.

Bob Madill

- I have a house but did not put it up yet- I only have the tall poles but no pulley system to raise and lower. I live in a very wooded area bordering a creek with a small clearing in my backyard. Will putting up a hose be useless because of the tress that border my property?

- I used to raise Cockateils so I know a little about breeding and caring for birds. I am still confused as to the date to unplug my purple martin house. (I should be receiving it in about 5 days. It is equiped with crescent holes.) One guide said fledglings are in my area from April 1st and this site says April 15th. I don't live near any body of water except we have a pool and fountains. Will this be ok? The reason I am putting up housing for Purple Martins is that we live near an egg farm and we have loads of flys that are unbearable. They will have plenty of food here. Is there a special time to bring down the house to check for nests when the parent birds aren't in or on it?

- Installed our first martin house in mid-May (Heritage Farms Quad-Pod) but no martins yet. I think our location is pretty good - our home is near Candlewood Lake in a suburban/semi-rural area in NW CT. Our yard is open/grassy and martin house is positioned away from trees. We are playing dawnsong. Help - what else can we do?! Are there other martin landlords in our area (northern Fairfield county) who can give advice? If so, please email me. Many thanks!

- No experience. I just built a house and noticed the martins using the mounds of soil as housing last year. I have a house I want to put up for them since the dirt is gone. I'm not sure how to identify their nest from other birds. Or when the house should be put up and or opened. I live between Niagara Falls, NY & Buffalo, NY. Any help or advise will be appreciated

- I have just moved from Conesus Lake, NY to Swain, NY. I brought my two martin houses with me. I am curious to know if it's important for the openings to be pointed east/west or north/south. At the lake they were faceing north/south for a straight flight into the house from both sides. I was never sure if that was right as there was always a lot of activity each year but I only had one pair nest in 3 years of trying.

- When I got my house last year, I also purchased a tape with the martin singing. Still none arrived. So I ordered and got right up a martin deco. All in the proper time, last year. This year I started my tape probably about the beginning of April on and off. Help! There are so many bugs they surely would love it here. They have been here before in an old house I took down because of the growth of a large tree. They came last year and took a look at the spot which is on the opposite side of the house, but never showed any interest in the new house. I was very careful with my measurements for tress closeness to the house for company, etc. HELP! Sincerely, Stev

- We put up 2 bluebird houses last year and had a bluebird family and a tree swallow family. We already have 2 bluebird pairs this year, which emboldened us to try a martin house. The instructions on this site say we put the martin house up too early, and need to take it down and stuff the holes to keep sparrows and starlings out. We are in the middle of the Catskills about 30 minutes NW of Woodstock and Kingston, near Phoenicia, Pine Hill, and the Belle Ayre ski area. We have ordered the Dawnsong tape, a predator guard, the Enjoying Purple Martins book, and some DE, but have not been able to find an owl/hawk guard. Any suggestions?
