- July 16, 2008 The Martins left today while I was at work. It was
really quiet around the house today. I'll miss the mornings of chatter
by the Martins.
I started with one 12 compartment house six years ago. Two years ago,
another house was put up. We started with 4 birds. Now there are too
many to count.
I wish there could be more publicity about the birds. More people
would like them, if they only knew how great these birds are at eating insects.

- My colony is located at the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in Southwest Virginia. Over the last 12 years it has grown from one nesting pair to over 70 pair. The enjoyment and relaxation Martins bring to my life is well worth the effort it takes to be a successful and responsible landlord.
Attracting Martins to your colony for the first time is not always an easy task. I have spent many more years as a landlord wanna-be than I have as a successful landlord. If you are looking for help or encouragement in establishing or improving your Martin colony don\'t hesitate to e-mail me.

- I have one 12 family house and have two nesting pair at this time. I ahve 8 or 10 martins that visit the house each day so maybe i will have more nesting soon. This is my first year with martins and I'm enjoying it very much. I plan to put up another 12 family house but don't know if it would effect the birds i have. Maybe someone could give me some advice on the second house?

- I have 60 Supergourds at the house and 60 at the lake about 1/4 mile from my house. About half have martins. It took me a long time and I believe the key is open space and lots of neat attractive houses with good snake guards.

- I would be willing to volunteer any information I could help out with. I've tried to establish martins for 3 years without any luck, then in 1997, I got my 1st birds. So I know the disappointments. I had 18 nesting pairs in '99.

- We have been Purple Martin landlords for the past 7 years. We would enjoy helping anyone that would like to learn more about becoming PM landlords. Last year, we helped 2 neighbors (that had both tried to attract martins for several years), and they both were successful in attracting these beautiful birds and having them reproduce at their location. If we can be of any help, we would love to hear from you. (20 miles from the TN border)

- First year landlord! Only one pair but am researching getting myself ready for next year. I\'ve had a ton of activity from other pairs this week. 4-6 at a time flying around checking out the other gourds. I\'m wondering how late in the season people have had nests.

- After much research I erected my first Purple Martin housing in Feb of 2006. I played the dawn song, ran off the sparrows and starlings and even put up an adult male decoy with no success the first year. In 2007 I was able to attract a pair late in the breeding season, an adult male and subadult female. They nested in one of the gourds and I was so happy. As soon as she laid 2 eggs, the male left her. A subadult male took his place and things were great until a bad storm came through and the pole bent way over. After repairing the pole, the adult birds left and the babies died. I was devaststed. The next day my wonderful husband spent a small fortune on a very nice housing system and I am so excited about the possibilities for 2008. I would love to chat with someone in the area with Purple Martin passion and advice for me. I\'ve loved these birds since I was a child when I helped my grandfather with his housing in Houston. Thanks :)

- I am interested in becoming a purple martin landlord because I beleive it would be an invaluable experience for me and my four children. We have a garden and spend a great deal of time outdoors. I understand purple martins are a natural approach to mosquito control. I have also recently learned that these birds rely on humans to provide their breeding sites. I have researched these birds on-line, but I could use some advice.

- I guess the 3rd year was the charm in getting martins!! Finally, have a pair nesting and possibly more. I can't tell just yet. I did a nest check about 1 week after nest building. The martins seemed leary and I was afraid I had scared them away. They are still here and I have been doing walk unders for the last few days. Plan to do a nest check tomorrow to make sure nest competitors aren't building. Would love to have a mentor to coach me in my firsts in being a martin landlord. How exciting this is!! Even my husband and daughter are becoming interested!

- I put up a house last year and saw no martins. This year I'm using Dawnsong and so far have seen no martins. A tree is near the house site, and I worry that that may cause problems, although there are two good clear approaches. Also we have no lake close by but a neighbor has put up a pool. I'm keeping my fingers crossed! And playing that darned CD.

- I just recieved my new S & K Martin House and pole. I will be putting it up tomorrow (11 March). Is it too late for the scouts? I bought this old plantation built in 1839 and it has wide open fields that I think would attract purple martins. There seem to be many people in the area who have gourds up, but I would like some advice in what I need to do next. Thanks, Dean Hunt

- I just put up a house about 2 weeks ago, not sure about the location, 1 tsree in way about 50 feet from the house. It is a 12 family house from S & K with the Tri Tel Pole. Found bluebirds trying to nest, took out their stuff, thinking I should take it down and put up something for them? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

- I had one pair last year that raised 4 young. I have seen a few martins this year, but I did not think they were mine, so I did not open my housing. From what I have read, they will wait for housing to be opened if they nested here last year. The few I have seen do not seem to hang around. I have a plastic martin house. The martins wouldn't nest in it, so I hung 2 natural gourds under the house. The natural gourd is what they nested in last year. This year I have 8 SuperGourds, but no rack. Would like suggestions on how to make a rack. I have a telscoping pole. Also would like info about making a pole guard to keep snakes away. Thankful for any information.
