  • I had my first ASY pair of martins nest during the summer of 2009. I have been trying to attract martins for several years. Once I put up a T-14 martin house with gourds underneath, I started to get some interest in nesting. I have been mentored by a good friend who has hosted martins in my county for a number of years. I will be more than happy to help anybody who has questions about what I did to start a colony, and share my experiences of how I attracted my first pair. I am also wondering if there are others within my geographic area that would like help getting started, or already have martins?

  • My colony is located in southeastern WI.about 6 miles west of lake michigan. I have been interested attracting purple martins for many years, but it wasn\'t until the last few years that I really got serious about it and pulled out all the stops. In 2008 I hosted 21 pair. I would like to share this experence and possibly help someone avoid making some of the mistakes that I made.

  • Been at this a long time. But just got my first breeding pair (SY\'s)last year. (2006) Have plenty of knowledge but little practical experience. Have a mix of different artificial gourds. Houses did not seem to do the trick. Info I gleaned from PMCA on Tree Swallow management was the ticket. Looking forward to this year.

  • We are new to this; I gave my husband a martin house for Christmas and we have put it up. This is April 23,2006; we have seen only tree swallows and sparrows so I think we should close up the holes for a while longer. Does anyone know when the young martins looking for new housing will arrive in our area, i.e. northern Illinois about 35 miles south of Wisconsin? I'd like to converse by e-mail with someone who has a colony in this general geographic area.

  • My wife and I purchased a metal Martin house - 12 rooms - away from trees and about 30 feet from the house. We put up the house mid August of 2004. Several days later, we had PM visitors 3 days in a row in late afternoon, early evening. In Sept. I closed the unit and now waiting. I am hoping to contact a mentor in my local area to assist in the development of my first colony. Thanks, Pete and Elise

I plan on raising it up the first week in May for the subadults that are predicted to show up then thru mid June. I am not aware of any PM enthusiasts in my area and trying to locate someone that could share some helpful info with me.

SUE HANSEN

  • We live in the country on a 5 acre lot with a large open meadow behind our house. We have placed our martin house on the side of a berm overlooking this meadow. We have cut down trees within a 40 to 60 ft. radius. We play the martin tape every dawn, during the day and dusk. There are tree swallow and bluebird nestings in the area. How far away should any other boxes be located? When will young fledgins be looking for new housing? How long should we continue playing the tape? This is our 2nd year without any success....any help will be appreciated. Located in southeast Wis.
