looking for a Mentor

  • My colony is located at the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in Southwest Virginia. Over the last 12 years it has grown from one nesting pair to over 70 pair. The enjoyment and relaxation Martins bring to my life is well worth the effort it takes to be a successful and responsible landlord. Attracting Martins to your colony for the first time is not always an easy task. I have spent many more years as a landlord wanna-be than I have as a successful landlord. If you are looking for help or encouragement in establishing or improving your Martin colony don\'t hesitate to e-mail me.

  • The 08 season was my 5th one as an active landlord, and I ended up hosting 23 breeding pairs. Big fan of the natural gourd, but I do offer plastic SuperGourds and Troyer Horizontals as well. Starting with the 09 season, I will try my hand at raising my own natural gourds, so I could use advice in this area. I ride my motorcycle all over SE Ohio and northcentral WV. Would be more than happy to help out anyone I can.

  • I have been an active landlord for 5 years. Our most recent breeding season included 12 pairs with over 50 babies fledged. Housing includes a Lone Star Alamo and a SuperGourd rack. We have successfully fed in harsh weather and maintain bluebird and tree swallow houseing as well.

  • As a mentor, I feel best qualified to assist those who are struggling to become PM landlords. In 2004, after 34 years of trying, I finally achieved my goal by hosting 4 breeding pairs.

  • I have sent for a house and telescoping pole. They should be here soon. I have also sent for a decoy, and two CDs of PMs chattering. We are located out in the country, sort of between Morgantown and Fairmont. We are not too far from the Pennsylvania border near Waynesburg. I would very much like to see what other people have done. Thanks. Catherine Fitch

  • I have erected a T14 house, but only a total of 6 units. the house is oriented East and West. I did not construct the smaller side units. I am in the process of adding hanging gourds to the unit. I live really close to the Interstate and I am afraid the noise and traffic might be keeping them away. I have saw martins around the house a few times over the years but no takers. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

  • I set up a Purple Martin house last spring but the only swallows to nest were Tree Swallows. The house didn't have the correct enterance holes so I have ordered a new house with 4 6X6X12 nesting spaces, correct SREH, and a telescope pole. I should receive the new house and pole next week. I had been told that Purple Martins have not nested in Greenbrier Co. for years. After checking around I have found another person who has told me that they have been sighted here in the past few years - I hope so!

  • (Southeastern West Virginia mountains) I would be very interested in having a mentor to show me the ropes about purple martins. I am just starting. Received a gift of a house this past Christmas. It had some residents during the spring and summer, but I think they were tree swallows, not purple martins. So, I have lots of questions.
