Price depends on the options chosen below. Years of research on the breeding biology of Purple Martins conducted by the PMCA has shown that martins have higher reproductive success in gourds than in any other type of housing. Natural gourds, properly selected and prepared, make excellent, inexpensive martin housing. Martins thrive in them, while non-native nest competitors have a tendency to avoid them. If you’re having difficulties attracting martins, we encourage you to give gourds a try. They provide martins with roomier accommodations, and afford greater protection from predators and weather than most manufactured martin houses. Hang a few gourds below your martin house, or offer them on a separate gourd pole.
PMCA Natural Gourds come with pre-drilled entrance, drain, and support holes. Due to Mother Nature’s role, gourd shapes will vary, and we cannot guarantee specific shapes, dimensions, or thicknesses. Natural gourds are durable, and if well-cared for, will last as long as 30 years. PMCA gourds are high-quality and have an outer diameter of 9”-11”.
Tip: To get the longest life out of your gourds, pre-treat by dissolving 1.5 pounds of copper sulfate in 7.5 gallons of water, and submerge each gourd for 15 minutes. Or, paint inside bottom of gourd with Thompson’s WaterSeal. Allow to dry completely before priming and painting exterior with good-quality paint. White, or light pastels, are recommended for maximum nest coolness.
