Rob, good to hear things turned around for you. Persistence and never say quit usually works out some how.

Re: Novice needs help!

gdoak, the crescent is a sreh so your good on the starlings. If your gone for 10-14 days the sparrows have probably started a nest upon your return. Put your trap in that cavity and camaflouge it with their own nesting material. It shouldn't take long to trap them if they have established their nest.

Re: New Novice Question

gdoak, I'm just up the highway from you in Raymore, MO. As they have hatchlings and they get older the adults become more protective. Don't take it personal they're just being good parents. I think as they trust you in future years you will see less of the dive bombing.

Re: Eggs and Babies count 2021

Majiken, that's great news. Keep trying to trap your sparrows to dispatch them as they will only continue to build and at some point will harm your eggs or Martins. If you expanded your nest size by opening up an interior wall you should also block off one of the entrances. They will nest as far awa...

You got a start. Hopefully they make their migration journey and draw in more next year. Enjoy the process of growing a colony.

Re: Eggs

The male being gone wouldn't affect the fertility as the egg is fertilized before it is laid. I had a female raise a brood by herself once after the male didn't return one day. She has a chance of doing it.

Re: too many eggs??

I have had a few pair renesting this year and some with a few eggs that didn't hatch. I think a few days of cold weather got to them and made them unviable. Some of the birds removed the eggs and some did not. This pair did not. I would wait to see what hatches.

Re: Wannabe Landlord

It does seem late but don't give up. I live just South of Kansas City, MO and a friend trying to start a colony for the first year has snagged an ASY male which has been nest building and another sy pair has joined them with building their own nest. He is seeing 6 to 8 Martins at times so I'm not su...

Re: Starlings

I apologize that I think I misread your post on the type of housing you currently have. If you have a house you can add the plates. To convert gourds to sreh I believe it is best to add a tunnel and porch with the sreh.

I seriously doubt you scared them off. Was there only nesting material or were there eggs as well?

Re: 2nd strait day ASY Male Visit--Question could he be starting my colony?

I have ASY pair eggs that will hatch any day now. A couple sy pairs are at the beginning stages of nest building so they can really get strung out.

Re: Hoping to be a new Landlord

Hate to hear of your bad luck and sounds like you were doing things the right way with the predator guard. How long and big around is the guard? My first thought was snake as I don't think it would show signs of disturbing the nest but with a snake I don't think you would find an egg on the ground. ...

David, good to here from you again. I'm glad to hear you are taking your satellite rack with you as it is quite unique and your brain child. Hope you have just as much success at your new house but will miss hearing about the one and only Hot Rod.

Re: Chicadee Interference Redux

Gotham, I personally would play the dawnsong. I don't think it will run them off but if you see it having a negative effect on them turn it off and your decision has been made. On the positive side of playing it, Martins want to be around other Martins so it can make them feel more comfortable being...

Re: Starlings

Kelli, I have no experience with changing entrance holes mid season. Maybe someone else here does and they will respond.Do you have a lot of starlings? If you can control them by shooting you are good to go. The advantage of the sreh is they keep the starlings out 24/7 when your not there. When addin...

Re: Starlings

Gourds hanging below your house is a good option and many have had success with that. If your nesting pair survive the migration there and back, it would not take them long to figure out a sreh and I would not see it as a problem. You can also purchase sreh plates to go over your round holes ( after...

Re: Starlings

You said the Starling tried to enter. Do you have sreh? If so he will learn he can't enter and move on. Regardless, the starling trying to enter would not run them off. What I have noticed is they use their social time to nest build and still go out and feed in the afternoon. Watch for them to come ...
