Re: Hoping to be a new Landlord

Congratulations, that's a pretty sight. I would suggest sprinkling the sevin dust around the perimeter of the nest a couple days before eggs hatch. That will give you longer coverage after the babies have hatched.

Re: Martins Predawn Song Queston.

I have heard mine singing the dawnsong last year and again this year. Last year I heard a few of them overhead at dawn. This year I have heard a single male the last 2 mornings at dawn singing from the gourd racks. I would imagine when they're up high singing it would carry for some distance.

Re: Owls at Night

Spiderman, thanks for sharing your experience. I have not had an owl issue, but at some point I figure I will as owls set and hunt near my colony. I often ponder what approach I will take when it happens. This sounds like a good option.

Re: PM’s still in the area

The rule of thumb is for sy birds to show up 4 to 6 weeks after the asy birds. Your asy birds will probably draw some in. Not odd for the male without a female, sometimes they find a mate very quickly and sometimes it takes awhile. There house selection is interesting and different at each site. Min...

Re: No Martins Yet here in Central Indiana

The dawnsong is a song that the male Martin will sing at dawn to attract other Martins to the colony. A recording is very effective anytime of the day to draw in Martins to have a look. The more visitors you get the more likely one will stay and want to take up housekeeping. There are different opti...

Re: Why the fighting?

It's not uncommon for them to dominate more than one gourd. Hopefully the new birds will want to nest bad enough to fight there way in. Do you think the bigger purple bird was an asy male?

Re: No Martins Yet here in Central Indiana

Is your housing in the open clear of trees and obstructions, they need open flyways. The number one attraction tool is the dawnsong, you should be playing it from predawn until dark. Prenesting with pine needles will not only help them get a headstart on th here nest but will make your housing look ...

Re: Returning?

If you only had one pair last year, I would be playing the dawnsong, decoy, prenesting, etc. as if you are starting from scratch in case your pair did not survive their migration journey. You need to be drawing in more birds regardless. My 2 cents.

Re: Purple Martins laying eggs in Central Virginia

You can be assured you will not run them off by lowering your housing. If you watch them they will carry nesting material in such as small twigs, leaves, weed stems or the like before they start laying, but it's not a problem to lower and keep track of progress. Good Luck

Re: First birds

It's not too late to prenest, pine needles might be your best ootion as they will dry out if they get wet. Are you using any other attractants such as dawnsong or decoys? A predator guard should be something you add. It would be a shame if you got some to nest and then a snake ate eggs or hatchlings...

Re: Getting them to Stay?

Now you have opened a can of worms. :) Different people have had success by turning the dawnsong off after they have attracted their first Martin. Others have had success by continuing to play it ( as long as you can't see it affecting the Martins negatively) to help draw in more potential birds for...

Re: Getting them to Stay?

So you have 2 dawnsong devices playing now? I don't have experience with that and haven't heard anyone else mention it either. Maybe that is a little too much??? Everything else sounds like you've done your job. It's time to set back be patient and let your ASY male do his job now. Watch and enjoy, ...

Re: PM’s still in the area

Susan, not sure if your brother opens his up several weeks after they are sighted at his site or in the general area. After they have successfully nested they will show site fidelity to that site and return the following year. Unless you are having problems with starlings, sparrows, tree swallows, b...

Just curious and should have asked earlier. Why do you think you should wait 4 weeks? If the martins are there your housing should be open.

Re: ASY nesting at a new colony?

That's great, instant colony. I think the advise that sy birds will start a new colony are inaccurate. I posed the question last year to landlords and it was 4 to 1 asy over sy bird starting their colony.

Re: Strange

You made me look, I have had no reason to nest check yet since I just noticed the start of nest building last weekend. I am happy to report no dead martins and indeed nest building has started. I got that snow as well, but I believe my martins were able to feed each day even on the snow day temps go...
