Re: Martin Babies.

Play that dawn song 4 or 5 am to say noon then again in the evening from 5 till dark. Dirty up those entrances and pre nest those cavities with pine straw. And keep out all ...

Only 7 left to fledge

Been a great season numbers more than doubled sad part is there’s only seven left a fledge. Hopefully they’ll hang around for another week or two but if they don’t that’s OK too. The minute they leave the wait begins. But I have plenty to do cleaning out all the old gourds get them ready for next ye...

Re: The Grim Reaper In Action At Her Favorite Tree On June 10 and June 21, 2020

Wow that was a lot of reading but anyway get you some bottle rockets and a piece of metal pipe about 24”s long and work on your aim. If you can sit their just watch these attacks happen then you can send some bottle rockets that way to disrupt these attacks. There’s no way I would be able to just wa...

Re: Brand new - could use advice on housing

I would play the Dawn Song as loud as you possibly can with out pissing of the neighbors. It with really draw them When they are migrating north in the spring and it couldn’t hurt to play it this fall as they migrate south. Do you want as many birds as possible to see your set up this fall as they m...

Re: Brand new - could use advice on housing

White pine needles to pre nest, a little mud on the porch and entrance. And don’t forget the Dawn Song play it in the morning from 4am to maybe 10 each morning. Or you can play it from 4am to sunset that night each day. If you can replace the pole for a pole you can put a wench on weight shouldn’t b...

New 12 Troyer horizontal Gourd rack

I placed a new rack in the front yard soon after a large number of SYs arrived so the would have nesting areas because the other 3 racks were full of ASYs. They took to it very quickly and within 2 days they were nest building. So I had 5 new pairs with eggs only 1 nest now has 2 to 3 week old babie...

Nest check

I did a mid day nest check on Sunday and had 3 young fledge while raising the racks back up. All of them flew very well so I assume that they will be fine. Also found the first gourd in the 5 years that I have been having Martins that has mites. A little 7 dust will fix that.

Re: NEW MEMBER EXPERIENCE

Whichever house you use old or new place 4 troyer horizontal gourds To the bottom of the house just to give the Martins another option to nest in. At my site in East Tennessee my martins prefer the 3 Varieties of gourds that I have and will not touch the house that I have up. Don’t know why but they...

Re: Nest replacement?

Peter I would not think it would bother the parents if you are able to do it in a quick way. I would worry more about the length of time it will take to pull the young from the gourd put them in a box clean out the old nest put in the new nest with alittle 7 dust. If you have the new gourd already p...

Re: Decoys

Hey Whippy I took you up on the advice. I Used two pieces of bamboo about 8 feet high and mounted them on poles that are around four feet high. I placed a Long ride between the two and placed four decoys along the rod close together to look like several Martin’s perched together. Not sure what kind ...

Re: Decoys

I have all thread rods as my perches at the top of the poles. I drill a hole in the decoy just a bit smaller than the all thread and screw the decoy on to the all thread. It’s on there pretty tight but if a hawk or owl hits it it will turn up or down. Also you can move it back and forth along the al...

Decoys

W was sitting on the back patio this morning when out of nowhere ones a small hawk trying to get a martin. All the Martins scattered and he was only left with a decoy to grab at. All of the Martins chased him into the next county. If you newbie landlords don’t have decoys up get them could save your...
