Re: Luring sparrows with sparrow chick calls

Try to find a sparrow distress call. That might bring them in as well. If that works then you'll have a two pronged approach for those pesky little things.

Re: Birds Not Liking Decoy

I had an ASY male wearing out one of my decoys so I removed it as well. I figured he had better things to do than to swoop down on this all day. My hawk issues have gone away so I'm not worried about taking it down. I'll put it back next Spring and remove again once eggs have hatched.

Re: What To Do After A Hawk Attack?

Birdman, I placed my decoys in the path of the Martins exit from the gourd rack and housing. They would have to fly by the decoys when they left. By doing this, the decoys are then in the path of the hawk if it decides to bust in on them when they are on the gourds. The decoys will slow the hawk dow...

Re: Lights for owl protection

Dave, I've read that lights don't have a real effect on the owls. What has worked for a few here is the playing of music below the gourd rack. Owls hunt by sound and they hone in on the sounds of the martins chattering at night. With the music on they can't hear the martins. Do a quick topic search ...

Re: Landlord dive bombing

Maybe he wants to play.

Take some crickets out with you next time and when he dive bombs you toss him a cricket or two and see what he does. Most likely he'll ignore the crickets but these birds have such neat personalities that he may just start taking them.

Re: Nest check 6/6/21

My season is going just like yours. Having had a stumble with a coopers hawk in the spring everything turned around just fine. I've increased by 20 pairs with an addition of a bunch of SY birds working the gourds and T-14. There are nests in both gourds and T-14 but I haven't counted them as solid p...

Nest Check today 6-6-21

Got the rack and houses down today away from some very busy parents. Boy did they fuss. Out of 24 gourds I have 19 pairs I have 3 pairs in my Trio with 6 compartments. I have 8 Pairs in my Jangles T-14 with 5 nests with no eggs but I suspect these were built by 2 industrious pairs. I've seen them br...

Re: Morning Hawk watch

Here's Manny. I timed the photo to have 4 martins in the air and a few on the gourds. This is at 2:18pm central. A lot of feeding babies going on with a lot of SY activity as well. The head is a flat size 3 soccer ball and a baseball cap fits on it just fine. The arms are a 2 inch PVC pipe with a ho...

Re: Morning Hawk watch

I had a big issue with a female coopers this spring. She hit me every other day. I began to spend a lot of time looking out windows and being in the back yard and figured out where she liked to perch to launch her attacks. There was also a smaller male that hung around. So I decided to make them hat...

Re: And just like that ,they are gone

Charles, The Mississippi Kites do not pose an issue here in Plano. I have 3 or more every year cruising around. Kind of cool to watch them. They also feed primarily on insects but will take the occasional rodent or small bird as I have read. I've had them cruise through my airspace pretty low and th...

Re: How in the world do you guys count Martins?

MJM, They won't leave. They'll appreciate having a more secure cavity. Most landlords here will do nest checks weekly and even change out nest material at certain points in the baby martin's development. I have many times had to put babies back in their gourds after they fell off the porch. Bottom l...

Re: How in the world do you guys count Martins?

MJM, Glad to see you aboard. Those cavities with two holes each should actually have one hole. If there are two entrances to one cavity, you will have birds going in from each hole and fighting feverishly inside the cavity. So it's not a real party so to speak it's a fight for ownership. I would adv...

Dang right. It's a party all morning long then in the evening I have so many Martins in the air I can't count them. I look across the neighborhood and see Martins flying all over and then, within a few minutes, they all converge on whippy casa de martins and it's all over as they have come into roos...

Re: Anti Seize Grease

Carlton, I don't have these issues you describe but I do know about getting things unstuck. For the poles that are stuck together get a product called PB Blaster. It's a penetrating lube that will get into those joints and allow you to loosen them up. When I use this stuff I get a propane torch and ...

Re: Sevin 5% dust treatments

I treat when I do my pre-nesting before they arrive. After that, as I do nest checks every week and I'm outside every day, I will treat as necessary from there on out. I've found that if I get them treated when they arrive, I don't need to re-treat during the season. I've had one gourd get infested ...

Re: An Eastern Kingbird.....

Does he use the top of the martin housing to perch on? These guys like to perch on things while they hunt so maybe he's using this as his hunting perch and protecting it from the Martins. If that's the case maybe put up a perch pole or something for him to use a good distance from the Martin housing...

Good morning. Email the photo to yourself. Once that is done, download it and save it. Once that is done, open the photo and go to the tools tab. Click on "adjust size". The very top box will have a number in the "width" field and it sometimes is in the 20 range or maybe in the 15 range. Just change...

GM, In my experience they will return. I was hounded for weeks by a female coopers hawk. She was relentless. I have no idea how many she got during this time when I wasn't looking but, when I was looking, I personally saw her take 6 or more. I felt like I was offering up a bed and breakfast of Marti...
