Re: So hot & humid! I hope they make it...

Man I love that look! Never get tired of seeing them. It sounds like other martins are gathering to see them off, its quite a spectacle. Somehow they know, don't understand it but they know. What they will do is encourage the chick to fly, chasing and screaming at them. They know the fledges must ge...

Re: Year round starling trap

Sir, its an all year battle but a good one to keep at wish you success! The minimum number of houses is based on how much money, time and effort you want to put into martins. Typically a martin site will grow, starts out with one house or gourd rack, and it goes from there. If starting a new colony,...

Re: Close call

10 4! Oh its fortified, but more coming. I'll move the guard higher, its about 4 feet now. 5 feet sounds good.

Yep, grew up with them too, it will curl up somewhere close, rest and get hungry again..
they released it about 30 yards away. Too close actually.

Re: Close call

Thanks Rob, They were doing good too. It rained like heck so enough hung down. No excuse for that. I think those chicks were killed too. I watched for a while, the adults were going in to inspect the lone chick so its going to get fed. But the ones in the gourd that lost the eggs shunned that gourd....

Re: Babies, and a SNAKE!

Well, you never know. I was quite sure I had enough yet a foot long rat snake wiped out a nest of 6 eggs due to hatch in 4 days. It was found today by the folks out at our satellite site, coming down evidently.

Re: Close call

Update-well it didn't. It wiped out a nest of 6 eggs. Also nest one gourd over had 3 dead chicks out of 4, 5 or 6 days old. I talked to the lady who cut it out, she said its head fit through the netting, so it must have climbed up, caught some of the netting that had fallen over the predator guard, ...

Re: Nature house mss 12 lanyard lock question

rob, iv got only two sections up, its plenty high enough but if lowered does spin. And its reinforced, but it also sways. This will give it a lot more stability, our prevailing winds are rather gusty 20-25 mph most days. I have another winter project to go with the winch install. Thanks Dave for the...

Re: Babies, and a SNAKE!

Wow, we found one too but not that size. Honestly that is a pretty snake, however the chicks are much better looking. If you don't have snake netting up, id suggest it.

Close call

the manager out at our satellite site at the Oso Bay wetlands found this little guy in our snake netting! He's got a lump in his stomach but she says the birds are acting normal now after the commotion at the bottom of the gourd rack. It was cut out, released unharmed. Close call. I'll check after w...

Re: At what point after fledging do the martins become communal...

Brent, as far as Iv seen even after fledging and they have moved to roost the ASY males and females come back and defend their now empty nest. they are dedicated to that cavity and will defend it, although they have no immediate plans to use it. Nor do they stay over night after going to roost, they...

Re: So hot & humid! I hope they make it...

Its so much fun but worrying too. They will be fine, enjoy while they are here. I really like seeing them at the entry ways seeing the sky for the first time. I should have said the two big box stores will have the PVC 90 degree elbows! Sorry. Install them on the back of the gourd just above where t...

Re: Nature house mss 12 lanyard lock question

Thanks rob. I'll go for it. Appreciate that. As far as the spinning, there is a notch at the top of the house that catches the small peg that runs through the pole just under the pulley assembly to keep it stable. If its not seated properly it will spin, most times that occurs when house is not rais...

Re: So hot & humid! I hope they make it...

hi, Venting is extremely important, even with the chicks body temp of 103 degrees. The panting you see is normal, its not a sign of stress. sounds like your birds are just about to fledge! Congrats. Do a quick search for venting gourds in the advanced search and find the best method that works for y...

Re: Luring sparrows with sparrow chick calls

I'll try to find one whippy, good idea. Have a blains repeating trap coming. Found a pinned egg in my neighbors gourd rack. From 5 chicks to one. His wife won't let me shoot, they feed sparrows but when she's away.....to be fair we have 6 or 7 subbies raising cain. They follow birds with food, peste...

Luring sparrows with sparrow chick calls

so spent Father's day plotting against the sparrows. Iv declared war. Since the sparrows are just now fledgling chicks, I wondered if a baby sparrow call would lure the males in, especially one certain hard to get male. You've seen the box traps with a sparrow recording, wondered if I could do it. F...
