Re: "The Birds & The Bees"

Thanks for sharing that, Kathy is awesome and a fantastic landlord. I used her snake guard idea and caught three of the darn things, saved our satellite colony I think. They will be on all my systems next season. One thing that I was told by John barrow- (another fantastic landlord) who knows her, i...

well, glad to hear you weathered that storm in relatively good shape; as you pointed out, many many did not. your poles did great in 150 mph winds, so did your house! Good gosh. wish you guys all the best.

Re: Texas hummingbird migration 2021

Same here, some young ruby throats and a black chined that I think has moved on. Iv four feeders up, maybe 5 hummingbirds now. Thats it. J. Barrow and Louise have a buff bellied at their place, I happened to be by; that was one noisy hummingbird, lots of fussing at me. lots of rain here locally so f...

Re: Off season trapping

I'm going to try real hard to put a dent in the sparrow population. Live sparrows are best bait. Had two day before yesterday, last evening another. They show no intrest in nest boxes but starlings are ready to poke their heads in anything. Glad your having success! I like to think I'm doing the woo...

Off season trapping

Have had luck with off season sparrow and starling trapping. Blains for the sparrows and nest box traps for starlings. Never saw a van ert insert trap in action though. Starlings were at the suet feeders, I hung a woodpecker house with a van ert trap right behind the feeders on the fence about 3 fee...

Re: Already Excited

Any of the trio housing are good quality. Look around your area and see what others are using, perhaps that will give you an idea but Florida is martin rich area. May be a combination of gourds and a house? shoot, martins will be returning there in a few short months! haha. Key to combatting the hea...

Re: Texas hummingbird migration 2021

Good topic!! love this time of year because of the hummingbirds. We don't have many yet. 3 or 4 maybe. Last year we had a rufous stick around nov - march, even during the freeze he would come every day. Tough little guy.

Re: 1 martin keeps returning

Interesting! I think that happened last year or the year before to someone, eventually the martin left. never happened here. That is one bird who likes his home, Id imagine as the roost leaves so will he. All iv seen are some swallows heading south, miss the martins already. Enjoy him while you can,...

Re: My bird joke

Gary, I'm going to use that! I read it to my wife, after a bit of dead silence she sent me to my room. Here's a snail joke: A snail goes to a car dealership because he's tired of the same old "Snails are slow" story. He asks the salesman if he has anything sporty and small. Dealer says "yep, I have ...

Re: Snake guards

Hi! A worthy cause, lost some eggs to a snake this year.. I can recommend two types for you. If you Google Kathy freeze snake guard on u tube she's got a great setup and its quick, inexpensive and effective. We caught three snakes with it. Another easy make is one that chuck Abare makes can be found...

Re: Year-end clean-out evolution

What your doing there is very special to those folks, I know if I were looking through a window at martins I'd have lots of fond memories of them, I'm glad you get the chance to bring their loved ones closer. That sir, is the best medicine. Good for the soul. No kidding about Spohn! Had to have been...

Re: Year-end clean-out evolution

Gary, Its funny you say that. Today I took the pole and last 6 gourds down for cleaning at our satellite site as well. Brought them all home because I like to grease and lube the pole before taking it back out there to put in the connex. Didnt have the hot water though, unless you count the hot wate...

Re: Going Down After 22 Years

Yeah I saw him. Bet your birds were nervous. We have a few flocks of wild parrots here, saw a hawk on a high wire checking two out, the parrots knew it was there and were making all kinds of noise, looked to me like the hawk didnt know what to make of them. Well you gave it a shot hanging in there f...

Bumbee,
Sorry to hear that, you've been at it for a while. Wish you all the best with your aviary. Hope your able to encourage others in your area to become landlords.
Gary had a great suggestion.

Re: When to take down housing

I used to count adults. Impossible. Now i do a pair to a cavitiy, eggs then chicks. Sometimes there's a single male in a cavity, don't count it. You have a good count. Because it is necessary (sometimes) to do a nest check with older chicks present you may want to consider having the ability to do n...

Re: When to take down housing

Hey Jeff, Good call no rush to take it down. Ill try to answer your question about those fledges. Some will leave the nest 2 to 3 days early, and return with the adults then slowly they will all learn to fly. May take a few days some are just reluctant, it takes some coaxing by the adults. They do r...

Re: When to take down housing

Seems to me that martins are not interested in sleeping in houses or gourds when they are in migration out mode? End of season they would come by, check things out and land inspect cavities or even defend a cavity. Then they would transition to just a low fly by, now I can hear a few (yesterday), wa...
