Close call

the manager out at our satellite site at the Oso Bay wetlands found this little guy in our snake netting! He's got a lump in his stomach but she says the birds are acting normal now after the commotion at the bottom of the gourd rack. It was cut out, released unharmed. Close call. I'll check after w...

Re: At what point after fledging do the martins become communal...

Brent, as far as Iv seen even after fledging and they have moved to roost the ASY males and females come back and defend their now empty nest. they are dedicated to that cavity and will defend it, although they have no immediate plans to use it. Nor do they stay over night after going to roost, they...

Re: So hot & humid! I hope they make it...

Its so much fun but worrying too. They will be fine, enjoy while they are here. I really like seeing them at the entry ways seeing the sky for the first time. I should have said the two big box stores will have the PVC 90 degree elbows! Sorry. Install them on the back of the gourd just above where t...

Re: Nature house mss 12 lanyard lock question

Thanks rob. I'll go for it. Appreciate that. As far as the spinning, there is a notch at the top of the house that catches the small peg that runs through the pole just under the pulley assembly to keep it stable. If its not seated properly it will spin, most times that occurs when house is not rais...

hi, Venting is extremely important, even with the chicks body temp of 103 degrees. The panting you see is normal, its not a sign of stress. sounds like your birds are just about to fledge! Congrats. Do a quick search for venting gourds in the advanced search and find the best method that works for y...

Re: Year round starling trap

http://www.americanartifacts.com/smma/per/tip.htm Hello, And enemy of a starling will find many friends here. I have a few nest box traps that work, but you want numbers it sounds like. I stumbled on an interesting page, made by an individual who took starling control to a new level. Maybe some will...

Re: Luring sparrows with sparrow chick calls

I'll try to find one whippy, good idea. Have a blains repeating trap coming. Found a pinned egg in my neighbors gourd rack. From 5 chicks to one. His wife won't let me shoot, they feed sparrows but when she's away.....to be fair we have 6 or 7 subbies raising cain. They follow birds with food, peste...

Luring sparrows with sparrow chick calls

so spent Father's day plotting against the sparrows. Iv declared war. Since the sparrows are just now fledgling chicks, I wondered if a baby sparrow call would lure the males in, especially one certain hard to get male. You've seen the box traps with a sparrow recording, wondered if I could do it. F...

You have removed an old egg that didn't hatch, put it in your pocket. when done nest checks, sit down, and crush the egg in your pocket with the clipboard.

Re: So rewarding!

Rob,
Its fun now, in feb it will be deadly serious and hope they remember. Dragonflies are just now starting to go in, we don't have near as much water available as you guys, glad they can enjoy the feast!
Hope the storm doesn't affect you.

Re: So rewarding!

Brent, took a few days for them to go after them, the grackles cleaned house. But one looked good enough to eat. I kept shooting them in the same flight path, i stand about 30 feet from the gourds and flip up and parallel to them. My neighbors martins get in the game too but when we try flipping at ...

So rewarding!

just have to share: iv been flipping crickets every evening, chicks are getting bigger now so the martins are taking the food in. There's one ASY who has started watching close from his porch, as soon as I raise the spoon he launches and grabs the cricket, he comes so close I can hear his wings. He ...

Hey birdiegirl, You are a good landlord, will be even better with these experiences and able to provide advice to others. You can plan for next year, make things better for yourself and the martins. Sorry for the loss of your nests. Mother nature will always weigh in. If you get a new replacement po...

Re: A very disheartening year -

George, Sorry for the lost martins. Sounds horrible, been a tough year for some of us. I completely understand about snakes, I think they are great. Grew up with pythons, a 9.5 foot boa constrictor, had california king snakes, hog nosed snakes, a beautiful indigo snake list goes on...drove my mom nu...
