Re: Luring sparrows with sparrow chick calls

I'll try to find one whippy, good idea. Have a blains repeating trap coming. Found a pinned egg in my neighbors gourd rack. From 5 chicks to one. His wife won't let me shoot, they feed sparrows but when she's away.....to be fair we have 6 or 7 subbies raising cain. They follow birds with food, peste...

Luring sparrows with sparrow chick calls

so spent Father's day plotting against the sparrows. Iv declared war. Since the sparrows are just now fledgling chicks, I wondered if a baby sparrow call would lure the males in, especially one certain hard to get male. You've seen the box traps with a sparrow recording, wondered if I could do it. F...

man, sorry. It doesn't end. thought 2020 was bad, guess it extends into 2021. sorry you had to witness that first hand, and to have the chick in your hand. almost over...and your right, its almost a sigh of relief when they go.

You know you are a martin LL when...

You have removed an old egg that didn't hatch, put it in your pocket. when done nest checks, sit down, and crush the egg in your pocket with the clipboard.

Re: So rewarding!

Rob,
Its fun now, in feb it will be deadly serious and hope they remember. Dragonflies are just now starting to go in, we don't have near as much water available as you guys, glad they can enjoy the feast!
Hope the storm doesn't affect you.

Re: So rewarding!

Brent, took a few days for them to go after them, the grackles cleaned house. But one looked good enough to eat. I kept shooting them in the same flight path, i stand about 30 feet from the gourds and flip up and parallel to them. My neighbors martins get in the game too but when we try flipping at ...

So rewarding!

just have to share: iv been flipping crickets every evening, chicks are getting bigger now so the martins are taking the food in. There's one ASY who has started watching close from his porch, as soon as I raise the spoon he launches and grabs the cricket, he comes so close I can hear his wings. He ...

Re: My challenging first 'colony'

Hey birdiegirl, You are a good landlord, will be even better with these experiences and able to provide advice to others. You can plan for next year, make things better for yourself and the martins. Sorry for the loss of your nests. Mother nature will always weigh in. If you get a new replacement po...

Re: A very disheartening year -

George, Sorry for the lost martins. Sounds horrible, been a tough year for some of us. I completely understand about snakes, I think they are great. Grew up with pythons, a 9.5 foot boa constrictor, had california king snakes, hog nosed snakes, a beautiful indigo snake list goes on...drove my mom nu...

Re: Wannabe Landlord

Welcome to the forum! Its a positive sign the young male is staying around, sounds like he likes your place. Does he sleep there at night? You have to watch real close, they scoot in fast and its over. It may be too late, but I'll wager your young male comes back as an ASY and starts your colony. Th...

Re: Mites!!!

Houses are easy to put under the nest-agree. Gourds you can put some along the gourd wall, until your duster arrives. Thats what I like about the longer tube, I can insert it and puff sevin in there. Doesnt take much, if chicks are active I compromise and get it near the front, there's more activity...

Re: Mites!!!

Ill put some in when the martins arrive. I like to think it gets the mites at their sourse Rob. Ill re-apply when they have eggs, again with chicks, or if I see mites. Thats what i like about the puffer, it can dust mites on the outside of the gourds or house.

Re: Mites!!!

I think it was bed bath and beyond, strangely enough. Walmart may have them. The puffer holds alot, easy to fill it with sevin...deperess the rubber bulb to get the air out, stick the business end in the sevin and suck the sevin right in. I was dragged to bed bath and beyond under duress...I swear. ...

You will love sevin dust. So will the martins.

Conrad you nailed it, I use the turkey baister looking puffer, helps it get under the nest.

Re: too many eggs??

It sounds like its a double clutch. We had 11 last year in one nest. I flipped out, mr Barrow brought me back to earth. Dont move any, some are viable some not. More than likely 3 or 4 will incubate and fledge. Of the 11 we had we had 4 of that nest survive. Its an amazing number, have to wonder how...

Re: Taking inventory of PMs

Yes, gently. I think it happens alot especially when looking for capped eggs. It doesn't take much, they move around. A flashlight often helps...tip: look for beaks and count those.
It will be fine.
