Moved a chick

had to move a chick, 8 days old in a nest of 6. Its siblings were much bigger that it was looked like it wasn't going to compete. He looked to be 5 or 6 days old. Had a nest with 1 chick, its about 5 days old and same size...the other 4 eggs in that nest didn't make it. Checked him today he looks li...

Re: Deluxe universal sparrow trap-trio houses

I feel much better now that its on the way sir. lost 3 chicks and two eggs to this stinking sparrow at our satellite site. It really laid waste to the trio martin nests. Its decided to move into a gourd now. I found sparrow poop on 3 vacant gourds, just a bit of nesting material in one. It doesn't e...

Re: Desperate times, fed the Martins who own us some shrimp

Rob, Sorry for your loss Rob. It was terrible, I won't go through that again. Lost all four early birds, like you tried crickets, eggs, even june bugs. Put them on porches, in cavities, on my roof. They wouldn't take at all. They all perished, I found one about a month ago tucked under one of our la...

Re: Deluxe universal sparrow trap-trio houses

All, Just a follow up. The Canadian seller for spare o doors is called natural insect control, after initially saying none in stock, they contacted me and said they had two used ones, with new cups and bags they could sell. I bought them. A little TLC and I'm in business. Read with intrest some old ...

Re: Best time to place a fallen chick back in a nest?

They do come back Brent, but they are busy with the fledgling birds so its hit or miss for food. But they know they are there. I'd put him back in the same nest, stuff him full and monitor. He may jump again. Here's a PS: during hurricane hanna we had 3 chicks late nest, parents all went to roost. A...

Re: Best time to place a fallen chick back in a nest?

Hi Brent, Good catch. Id feed it as much as it will eat, and place it back this evening. Any possible way to dip the crickets, June bugs and dragonflies in pedialyte? Look for nests with same age chicks but if there are 5 or 6 chicks in those already it may not get enough food. Look for a smaller nu...

Re: FledgeDay crowds

Yes it is possible one took off, the parents will stop feeding them soon to coax them out. They are not very good at landing when they return for the night. Painful to watch. Years ago some fledges got caught in a sudden rain, scattered like leaves did not know what was going on. They were going int...

Re: Desperate times, fed the Martins who own us some shrimp

Shrimp! Id never have guessed. what a wonderful solution, desperation breeds innovation. That was good thinking, congrats to you and your martins. keep the training going, flip every once in a while. weathers terrible when they first arrive.
good job!

Re: Devastated by Rat Snake

I hope your martins get through it fine, doesn't sound like they all took off which is fantastic. I can completely understand your feelings, its a hard thing to go through. But you'll get through it, so will your birds and they will be all the more safe for it. Your experience has lots of LLs lookin...

Re: ASY male having difficulty entering compartment.

Thats the case for the most part. they just don't like the small entrances and pressure on their backs. However there are those that try and try but can't, their mate makes it just fine...some will sleep on the porches and thats bad for a number of reasons...owls, other predators and feeding chicks....

Re: Devastated by Rat Snake

I'll add a PS: you never know when a snake may show. I was checking the poles just before work last month, still dark but why not. There was a foot long rat snake wrapped around one of the poles! He or she was in the grease I put around the base (for ants-very wet this year) and didn't get very far....

Re: At What Point To Stop Nest Checks?

sir, Some folks stop doing nest checks when chicks are about to fledge. Some use the plug and string method to plug the entrances with older chicks that way they can continue especially if there are mixed ages. Up to you how to approach it, I plug and will need to do that this year. As far as the ha...

Re: Supplemental feeding-feed tray

They arrive alive, put them in the freezer Rob. Just enough time to immobilize them. I think there are drawbacks to this, raising and lowering the rack to put crickets in but if used in conjunction with flipping should be fine. Its a good way to bolster them during the early bad weather, not such a ...

Supplemental feeding-feed tray

all, Watched a supplemtal feeding video, guy had attached his feed trey direct to the V formed by the gourd arms on the upper rack just below the perching arms. Anyone try this? Looked simple, had it zip tied to the arms. I think I'm going to give it a shot. Will have to adjust a bit and throw some ...
