Runt rebounding.

The runt I found on the ground was severely malnourished and dehydrated. I've kept it in a box feeding it crickets, june beetles, and dragon flies. My options are limited. I estimate it to be around 20/21 days old by referring to the picture charts I purchased here. I have a nest of 5 that is it's a...

Anyone know the estimated martin population numbers?

Just curious to know how many martins migrate to north America. And do they nest exclusively in man made housing?

Re: Storm just toppled my Martin house

I have had the experience of a pair laying 2 clutches not because they were destroyed but because the 1st eggs were infertile. So I'd say yes it is possible. Sorry to hear what happened. Good luck.

Birdiegirl, search "lights for owl protection". I posted pictures of my houses. The poles have netting above the pole guard.

Re: Best time to place a fallen chick back in a nest?

I do know the nest but the two chicks in there are much bigger and are at least 22 days old. This runt looks to be only about16/17 days old. I have a nest of 5 that are 17/18 days old. The only other one I have is a nest of 4 that will be 21/22 days old tomorrow. Do you think I should put it back in...

Best time to place a fallen chick back in a nest?

I have a runt I found on the ground that apparently was starving. It did not hesitate to eat crickets, June Beetles and dragon flies. Today doing much better. I want to place it in a nest of comparable aged nestlings. What time of day is best to do that? Should I feed it throughout the day then plac...

Re: At What Point To Stop Nest Checks?

I use the plug and string method once the birds are 22 to 26 days old and even younger just to make sure all is ok. Next week most are at fledgling stage 26+ days old. Unless I suspect something wrong I will not check those. The plug and string works even up to fledging. I've done it before when I f...

Re: Devastated by Rat Snake

Sorry to hear that. Scares the heck out of me. I,like Conrad, have a pole guard and bird netting on top of it. Never saw a snake but I know that it takes just one.

Re: Rolling eggs and pine needles

I have Trendsetter houses too and after my first year I removed the wire mesh. It wasn't suitable for the warm wet humid climate. Lots of debris accumulated underneath. I replaced them with nest trays. Works so much better. Keeps everything in its place. I've added nest material and sometimes replac...

Re: What To Do After A Hawk Attack?

Have you tried decoys to attract the hawk's attention? I have witnessed hawks several times going after the decoys giving the martins extra time to escape. I also use an air horn when I see the hawk in action or near the houses. The sound scares them. It's painful to lose birds to hawk attacks espec...

Re: Lights for owl protection

I like the idea of music. Right now though I have 6 medium solar flood lights positioned around my martin houses aimed at clumps of wild flowers and garden and then one brighter flood light aimed at a scarecrow that I put shiny garland around it's neck and arms. Last year I found an owl feather and ...

Re: Landlord dive bombing

That is funny because it has happened to me this year. I'm thinking " Hey it's me!". For me it's been this incredible protective female. Beautiful bird. I mean she'd come so close to my head I could hear her wings flapping and she'd make this loud scary vocal sound. It was great. Her chicks have fle...

ASY male having difficulty entering compartment.

Despite putting 2- 1/4 inch wide strips of tract tape in front of the entrance he still has a difficult time getting in. I spaced the tape 1/4 inch apart and about the same from the entrance. Should I add more so that there is little to no space between the 2 pieces? It takes him about 3 to 4 attemp...

Re: Peck wounds on 2 chick's heads...

My last nest check revealed that one of the injured chicks has lost it's left eye. It's the biggest of the three so he is healthy otherwise. My heart goes out to him. Earliest fledging for them is this week. Why do SYs resort to this sort of thing?
