Re: Rat snake...bluebirds.

I am soooooo excited to report that the little Bluebird chick that survived the rat snake attack and was coaxed out of it's nest by it's parents at 13 days old survived. I saw her (I think it's a female.) feeding along side mom in my back yard. Unbelievable!! I thought the worst would happen. She co...

Re: Fledgling martin wing— having trouble flying looks sprained/dislocated at elbow

I hope it's ok. I've not had that happen. If there is a rehabber near you might want to start there or your local wild life office. Here, I don't have close rehabilitators so it would be difficult for me to get help. God forbid should that happen. I wish that there were training for those who wish t...

Re: Why would they leave?

That is interesting. I don't know the answer but I can share something that happened to me last year that was similar. I had a nest of 3. It was very late in the season and all of the other martins were gone. The parents stopped feeding the chicks. Maybe occasionally I would see a parent bring food ...

Well you have us rooting for Kathy. Poor rabbit. Hard for me to kill a fly. Just don't get it. Keep us posted.

I don't know what it is but ToyinPA talked about it and posted some pictures of it. Other forum members might remember the post.

Re: Busy busy!

Good luck with Kathy. Do you think she jumped because of the snake threat? I just had a snake breach all of my guards and it left one little bluebird in the nest. The parents did not want it to stay and coaxed it out. Even though the chick was only 10 days old it managed to walk and fly a little to ...

I'd leave it alone. Keep the martin chick safe would be my #1 goal.

Re: Hand warmers in compartments?

I have Rob. During this year's freeze I used what ever I could find. I think they worked very good. Unfortunately, like so many, I lost birds to starvation. Hoping to be better prepared next season.

Re: Too rainy, too old?

Hi Paul. I've used the plug and string method up until earliest fledge date. In a couple of instances where there was concern, I've used this method even after the 26th day. I just make sure that I plug the hole as quick as possible and leave it plugged for 5 to 10 minutes after the house is back up...

Re: A good season

Nice Lisa. I had a good but challenging season. 70 fledged so I'm happy. All the efforts were worth it. Thanks for sharing. Quiet days ahead.
Can't wait for the singing and circlinging again.🙂

Rat snake...bluebirds.

Never thinking it would happen to my Bluebirds but it did. Had a nest of 2 chicks. A rat snake breached a pole guard and netting and ate one of the chicks. The Bluebird parents were acting unusual and that's when I notice the snake tangled in the netting. Apparently on his way down he got caught. I ...

Re: Nest Check 18

Hey Mike, my birds hung around for about 2 weeks after all fledged. I think they were all just waiting until everyone was ready to go. All gone now. It's been about 2 weeks now. I do still get a visitor or two now and again.

Re: Mites!!!

Put your out door lights on. They'll fly to the light and land on the patio floor. You just pick them and put them in a container with a lid. I use a plastic cottage cheese container and made holes in the lid. Once I'm through collecting for the night I put them in the frig. They stay alive but don'...

Re: Mites!!!

Hi Rob. I tried to flip crickets and scrambled eggs and had no takers. Someone posted that June beetles might be a good start because you can open their wings and it looks more like a flying insect. So this year I leave my patio light on and have been collecting them. I must have about 500 now. I fr...

Re: Blue Birds on Martin House

I have a pair of bluebirds that also use the martin's pole perch to hunt from but never have they discouraged the martins. Had 70 martin babies fledge this year. Currently bluebirds have a nest of 2 about 50 feet from my martin houses.

Re: High death rates

Do you think it can be attributed to that new disease that has been killing birds? There was a post about that earlier but martins were not listed as one of the birds affected. Sorry to hear about your loss. Do you see anything unusual about them? Did you find them in the nest or on the ground? Sad ...

Re: Unfertilized / non viable eggs

Wait. Check again. My experience has been to just see what happens. If they don't hatch they might lay a second clutch. Happened to me. Had 5 or 6 eggs. None hatched. She laid again. Couldn't tell the difference. She sat on all those eggs. I recalculated and once the second clutch hatched I was able...
