Michigan Martineers?

Anyone up in Michigan recently have about 20-30 fledge? Just this morning, after a couple weeks of ours leaving, I woke up to all these, definitely was not expected! Since our group left, we've had a few flyover and stop by on random occasions and then days with nothing. I'm assuming these came from...

Re: When to take down housing

Before I had a colony established I would leave mine up in Indiana once I stopped seeing any martins, usually some time in September. I also thought that one of the martins passing by from the south might just see my place and like it for next year. Now that I have an established colony I take mine...

Then you both! Something I should have added was too make sure you set the quality to 1080, otherwise it looks really bad.

360 video

Just wanted to share this with you all, just an interesting experiment we did. I took my 360 camera and taped it to the top of my perch rod pole which is about halfway between our two racks. We're going to do another video when the babies are hatched as we expect much more activity! It took them a s...

Re: % of needed open housing requirements

I thinks it's preference on how many you want and can manage. As long as you have open housing, and a safe environment to where they have successful high yield clutches, you'll find growth each year. We have a Troyer K-24, our first year we had 10 pair, last year (our second year), 21 pair. This yea...

Cicadas?

For those of you seeing the emergence of the 17 year cicada, has there been any interaction between your Martins and the cicadas as there is when the Martin's feast on dragonflies? I'm in Northern Indiana, I have woods around my area but not closer than 500 ft, I have not seen a single cicada yet.

Re: An Eastern Kingbird.....

As a last resort, have you thought about getting an airsoft gun?? I know some might think wouldn't be the most ethical way of getting rid of it, But a hit or two might feel like a wasp sting to it and that's all you might just need to get rid of it. Obviously as long as no Martins are in the vicinit...

I'm certain they enjoyed it!

I'm looking forward to When the cicadas start showing up here in the Midwest. I think the Martins will really have a fun time with them, especially if they're around when They have hatchlings!

Re: An Eastern Kingbird.....

have you ever seen this before or should I quit drinking? Don't be a quitter! Hahaha We had an issue with a king bird our first year. Luckily it only stayed for a couple days but it was using the Martin rack to perch on, the Martins tried chasing it away but that little evil demon winged stinker wo...

Re: Martins Predawn Song Queston.

No, I hadn't seen any vistors lately, this has probably been my worst year so far. Don't give up, this year's been very wacky. Mine have showed up much later than normal, They are still showing up now, A few more each day. I still haven't seen many second years so I'm hoping those will increase the...

Yes I have been playing it in the morning about a hour before day break. But for the last few days I heard them before I started playing it. Maybe they have started coming because I had been playing it.
I would have to agree with you. Have you had any luck since you originally posted?

Re: Martins Predawn Song Queston.

I've never seen ours leave our gourds in the morning. What I've noticed is at dusk they come out onto the perch rods and start singing. As the sun comes out and warms everything up, they tend to start flying around. For the most part, I can see how far mine go, they do large loops, out a hundred yar...

Re: No Martins Yet here in Central Indiana

deancamp, thanks so much for your prompt reply. The house is in the middle of my backyard, as far away from the trees as I can get it, and it's about 30 feet from my back porch. It is as open as I can get it, because I know they like open flyways. What is this dawnsong you mentioned? I guess it is ...

Re: Laying is 2 1/2 weeks later than last year.

I'd say it was that Texas deep freeze which didn't stop in Texas, it pushed everything back and killed off thousands of Martin's. I spoke to Danny from Purple Martin Propagators in Texas, he told me at one site which had 4 housings on it, they found 109 Martin's dead. Now multiple that by all the ot...

Re: Troyer Horizonta trap

I second what Deancamp said. I've done it that way many of times when I can't take them out with my pellet gun. I've never made the entrance smaller though. I've trapped a Martin or two, but they honestly don't seem to care.

Re: Getting a little worried in Iowa

First day of supplemental feeding was yesterday and it took some accurate flipping to get food to her with all the aggressive males and wind. Today she will fly right over me to grab what is flipped. She is also the first at the feeding tray. No more drooping wings. Many years ago we lost our colon...

Re: Getting a little worried

I have 26 of 26 cavities full. Guy across the street has 8 gourds full. They are ASY and SY birds, one or two subbies hanging around. Our satellite site has 3 pair and 3 singles, those numbers are up from last year this time. our birds bring in big numbers of migrants at night, being right on the c...

Re: Getting a little worried

Or are they going to be essentially starting over with SY birds? That's exactly what I'm worried about. If the young ones are just following instinct and not having the adults to follow where they should be going to established colonies. Last year I had just under 50 pair and it was only the 2nd ye...

Getting a little worried

So we are getting a little worried that the Texas deep freeze did quite a bit of damage to the Martin population. This is our third year hosting Martin's. We've had one visitor on April 6th, The previous two years they've always popped up at the end of March. In 2019 our first year, we had 10 pair, ...
