Re: SREH questions

Mr & Mrs Martin.jpg Mr. & Mrs. Martin are doing fine. This is day 3 and they are definitely staying and making a nest. The male has now learned how to easily go in and out of the SREH entrances. This has made me feel so much better that the Starlings won't get in and I that have done my job to ...

Re: SREH questions

Brent,

I found this information on another post: “adhesive grit strip below each entrance, & inside as well, may help them get better traction to get in & out”

Anyone out there know about grit strips?

Re: SREH questions

Thanks for the advice. Sounds good. Since the SY male I had earlier and the female have no problems, I will leave everything as is. I have my work cut out for me next year. I plan on expanding the rooms and making the holes larger. Maybe investing in getting new doors all together that have the SREH...

SREH questions

I have a pair of Purple Martins that have spent 2 nights. I put SREH plates over the original Trio entrances. I noticed the female has no problem getting inside. But the male has a hard time getting in. Must be because he is a little bigger than the female. After 3 or 4 tries he makes it. When I cov...

Re: Starling resistant hole

The couple spent the night. It was so much fun to watch. The male had a hard time going through the opening but me finally made it. They stayed in separate rooms. This morning I saw the male starting to bring twigs for the nest. I noticed the male has a really hard time going inside the new openings...

More birds

This morning I woke up to Purple Martins singing away. Now there is a different male with his mate. This male has his full darker color so I’m guessing it is an older one. They hung around for about an hour. I think they went inside the birdhouse. I’m not sure where the other SY male and his mate we...

Re: First bird of the season

It has been a week since the male found his mate. I see them almost every day flying around together. They are so much fun to watch. They haven’t nested in the house yet. The male use to spend the night in the house but doesn’t anymore. It seems like it is taking a long time but I am still hoping th...

Re: First bird of the season

Making progress. The male found a mate today. He is trying to get her to go inside the birdhouse. He goes inside and calls to her. So much fun to watch. She is flying overhead and landed on the house once. He’s working hard, hopefully he can get her to stay.

Re: First bird of the season

It’s been a week and still no mate yet or any other birds in the birdhouse,. Just the one and only SY male. He works hard all day searching for his mate. He comes back every night around 8:00 p.m. and spends the night in the house. He has the whole place to himself. I look forward to seeing him ever...

Re: Starling resistant hole

Yes, I was concerned about the fit over the old holes but I didn’t have the tools to make the openings larger. My bird house was left by the prior owner, I believe it is a Trio. I researched the replacement doors and it would have cost $56.00 plus shipping and would take 3-4 weeks for delivery. The ...

Re: First bird of the season

No new visitors yet. I saw a couple of Purple Martins flying around the house this morning. I’m hoping that it is the male trying to attract a female. Will keep you posted.

Re: First bird of the season

It definitely is a male because there is a clicking sound at the end of his song. He's back again today and so much fun to watch and listen to. I did a short video of him singing but wasn't able to attach it to this message. Still working on that.

Re: First bird of the season

Day number three: This same bird (the one and only) has been staying at the birdhouse....totaling 2 overnight stays. It hangs around until 9 - 10 am then comes back in the evening and stays overnight. I don't see any signs of it making a nest yet. Can someone please tell me if it is a female Purple ...

First bird of the season

Yesterday morning, at 9:00 am, a female stayed for about 1 hour. I watched her go inside the new starling resistant hole. Was glad to see her back this morning and it looks like she is staying. Only her so far. Will keep you posted.

Re: Starling resistant hole

SSMartin, thank you so much for explaining things. I am learning so much. I like the idea of hanging gourds under the house. Here is a photo of the house that shows it has plenty of space for that great idea. Thanks again for all your help.

Re: Starling resistant hole

Thanks SSMartin. I've been watching the Starlings. They haven't entered the house yet so I think the new entrances are working. When I added the Clinger plates to the doors, I tried to cover the existing hole the best I could. Attached are photos of the front and back of the doors so you can see wha...

Starling resistant openings

I resized the photo and clicked on "add files". This time I didn't get the message stating it was too large. This time it gave me an option to "Place inline or Delete file". I labeled the image then selected "Place inline". This created a string of symbols, words and numbers in the message field. Wh...

Re: Starling resistant hole

Thanks. I have a photo of the starling resistant plates over the openings on the doors. However, when I I try to attach the photo I get a message saying file too large. I was hoping to send the photo to get some online advice that would let me know that I installed them correctly.

Starling resistant hole

Last year Starlings nested in my Purple Martin birdhouse. This year I installed plates over the openings of my bird house. I have plenty of Purple Martins this year. They are trying to go inside the house but haven’t yet. How long does it take for the Purple Martins to figure out the new openings?
