Re: Rough Start but Good Finish

Passing along my experience…I have a trendsetter and started the year with round holes, quickly ordered SREH holes after having starling issues then later added the wing entrapment preventers and installed on the inside of the SREHs. Only had one pair nest in the trendsetter but they didn’t seem to ...

Re: Remove sparrow nest?

Thank you all for the advice. I’ll take it. Would be difficult for me to plug the hole at night time but that’s a good thought too.If the martin chick fledges first those sparrows better watch out!

Remove sparrow nest?

I have a new colony and had three pairs this year, two have fledged their young and the last pair has a only a single chick about 20 days old. I’ve been able to keep sparrows to a minimum through trapping but have one sparrow nest with babies about to fledge. I don’t want that. I don’t have a good s...

Inexperienced sub adults - return?

I had 2-3 pair of inexperienced sub adults this year that were unsuccessful due to their own inexperience or other sub adult males causing havoc. 2 SY pairs had nests, laid eggs but eggs ended up scattered and nothing hatched. No predator issues that I’m aware of. They seem to be around quite a bit ...

Re: Dead babies and missing eggs

Thanks Dave. I added some pine straw but I was late in doing so, well after many birds had started laying. In the future, should I add pine straw ahead of arrival as I think that would prevent the issue I had. I thought the pine straw was just to help “attract” but I think it also would help SY’s ha...

Re: Dead babies and missing eggs

Dave, that’s interesting and explains quite a bit of the weirdness I’ve seen this year while checking nests. I’ve see a total of 26 eggs and I may fledge 13 young if the remainder goes well. Only one baby died and the others were eggs removed from nests or scattered around in the compartment and the...

Re: Dead babies and missing eggs

Interesting info/theory on the SY males potentially being the culprits behind the missing eggs and babies. That would be a potential consistent theory with my missing baby and 4 eggs. Most of my birds are SY’s this year as last year was my first year at this location and I only had 1 pair plus one e...

Re: Dead babies and missing eggs

I had a similar experience this year. I had an SY female “ride down” during a nest check and I could see her, 1 baby and 4 unhatched eggs through the SREH during that nest check. I never opened the compartment. At the next nest check the baby and the other 4 eggs were gone. Still scratching my head ...

One compartment - Disappearing eggs

On a 6/13 nest check on the Quad Pod house I had a mother (SY female) ride down and stay in the compartment. First time for me to see this. I never opened it but could see her through the SREH. There was one baby, just hatched, and 4 unhatched eggs. The nest was extremely thinly made and the eggs we...

Re: Female abandonment - ?

That’s interesting. Do you know if they have laid eggs yet? I had my first SY pair last year plus one extra SY male and these three birds were the only ones I had at the house. It gave me an opportunity to observe their behavior a little more closely. I noticed that they would meet at the house in t...

Re: Rolling eggs and pine needles

Thanks for the comments. Did a nest check just before sundown and that compartment still just had the 2 eggs where I placed them - appears there has not been any activity in that compartment. One other nest where I added pine straw had 2 new eggs. Did not see many of the SYs coming in for the night ...

Rolling eggs and pine needles

At last next check I had a compartment that previously had 5 eggs and it was down to 2 eggs. SY pair. The house is a Trendsetter and it was in a compartment with a wire mesh liner. The nest was pretty thinly made and the 2 eggs were not in the center of the nest like you would normally expect and ap...

I have a burn pile as well about 100’ from 2 houses. Haven’t had martins very long but they seem to ignore it.

Re: Starlings!

Thanks. I have to order or make some for the new house. Old house has them on as of today. Appreciate the advice. Insert trap did it’s thing and caught 2 starlings right off the bat. We’ll hope they figure it out.

Re: Starlings!

Start of the weekend and just put in SREHs on the older house. They were the snap in kind that was part of the design. Also plugged 15 of 16 holes on the new house and set an insert trap in the open one. Game on! I am pretty sure the pair from last year is back. Lots of visitors each day with the da...

Thanks. Any concerns on installing SREH before the martins are established? Only had 1 pair last year so still trying to attract.

Starlings!

I put up a new Trendsetter martin house and within a day had several starlings checking it out and some began building nests. Fortunately it was before the SY were here and I put it down for a week and most went away. After raising again I still have 1 pair of pesky starlings there. Does anyone know...

Re: TO PLAY OR NOT

I had one pair last year plus an extra SY male. This year I was worried when they didn’t show up...was wondering if I had lost them. They eventually started showing back up in March but were not staying the night. At the advice of others I began playing the dawn song and no doubt they stayed around ...

Re: New colony 2020 - but not staying in 2021

For sure easier to see activity. They are interesting birds. Same thing again tonight. Female tucks in and the ASY male flies away. Guessing it’s good that the female is the one that stays...as she ultimately gets to decide where the eggs are laid!

Re: New colony 2020 - but not staying in 2021

Update - I believe all three birds that I had last year have returned, the ASY pair and an ASY male. I see them daily. One of the ASY males is paired with the female and the other ASY male appears at times. Interesting that initially one of the ASY males stayed the night upon arrival and now doesn’t...
