Re: Mites!!!

In the past I have just a small measuring spoon and put a small amount in, not even a full teaspoon. I lift the front edge of the nest up and dump it under there. I do this a few days before the first eggs are due to hatch. This one treatment kills any early mites and lasts long enough to keep the n...

Re: No Vacancy

Congrats on the success, the more Hoosier landlords the better. I added a new gourd rack to my colony this past offseason and they filled it up very quickly.

Re: % of needed open housing requirements

It is uncommon to get 100% occupancy on martin housing. So some people offer 16 gourds and each year they have 10-14 pair each year. It is very likely if that person added another 16 gourds they could have 25-30 pair the next year. If you want to expand once you get over 50% capacity of your housing...

Re: Storm just toppled my Martin house

Probably the same storm system that came through Indiana last night. I lowered my housing a few feet just before dark and am glad I did. They have been through stronger storms but you never know. The one we had last night only last about 20 minutes but the winds went from 0-60 in a few seconds. I am...

Re: Best PM Perch Diameter, Material, Paint Color

Years ago I used some of the green fiberglass garden stakes and they worked fine. The are not perfectly smooth which can help with grip and they are made to be in the weather. When I put my last T 14 up I grabbed a 6 foot piece of bamboo I had that came as a tree stake. It also varies in diameter fr...

It's usually a week or 2 before they fledge I start seeing them sticking their heads out the front waiting on food.

Re: Hole too small or something else?

It is not unheard of for martins at a new site to "peak" into cavities when they first arrive, even with round holes. Have you seen them anymore since you posted this, and have they gone in yet. If they are still not going in let us know what entrance style you have and how they are mounted (how far...

Re: 3, 3, 3 then 4?

If they are in different houses then the only logical way you could get an extra is if they were flying and landed on the wrong house and went in. I am assuming you will know once you check the other house if it is missing a baby or not.

Re: Way ahead of schedule.....

I'm hoping it's a sign that their instincts are telling them it's going to be a good summer for bugs. I also assume the quicker they have eggs laid the less time they will have to fight the late summer heat. All I have heard about locally is the cicadas but haven't heard or seen one yet in my area.

I've seen them a few times but always in the fall when the martins had already migrates south. When I was there in the fall their predator guards did not look effective at all. Not sure what they have on these systems....

Way ahead of schedule.....

I just did my first full official nest check of the season and was shocked at my findings. I had lowered my housing a week or so ago just to get a count of the number of cavities with nesting material in them, just to get an idea of how many I might have. That day it was 44 cavities with some type o...

Re: Persistent sparrows

I am not sure if you have any martins or not. The best way I have found to deal with a sparrow who is skiddish and can't be shot is with a glue trap. These can be disastrous so you must be very cautious. What I do is cut a round hole in a plastic lid from a cottage cheese container or something simi...

Re: Did I mess up?

No worries. It's not uncommon for me to have a couple martins ride down when I lower the housing. I always have a habit of tapping my wedding ring a few times on each pole before I lower it just to let them know I'm there. The only thing you need to watch is not lowering early in the morning while t...

Re: Starlings

I would get some SREH plates on the gourds as soon as possible. Any of them are better than none at all. If you have starlings, the odds are higher they will kill or run of your martins before adding SREH would cause them to leave. In your post above you mentioned you didn't know why the round hole ...

Re: 2nd strait day ASY Male Visit--Question could he be starting my colony?

It is not uncommon as it depends somewhat on arrival rate. When I had a younger smaller colony they would lay eggs pretty close together, and it made nest checks easier. Last year I had nests ready to fledge and some martins still sitting on new eggs. I usually stop lowering my housing at that point...

Re: How in the world do you guys count Martins?

Same, nests/eggs. Once you get more than 5 or 6 pair it can get tough. How many times have you looked out your window and not tried to count them? I remember going through that in the beginning. Every time I looked out the window I started counting......

Not sure what you mean when you say you have no SY or ASY males at you site. You must have one or the other if you have females laying eggs....When you say "white" chest, is it snow white or just a lighter color.

Re: Martins Avoiding Golf Course Ponds

Are there and larger bodies of water near by? My neighbor has a pond that is about an acre. I never see the martins use it but I assume it is because there is a lake (near 40 acres) down the road. I assuming the larger the body of water the easier for them to drop in then get back up. The ponds on t...

Re: 2nd strait day ASY Male Visit--Question could he be starting my colony?

I've seen ASY's squabble with each other but usually not to the extent that some actually leave the colony. The fighting between the ASY's and SY's is usually a little worse. Keep us posted.
