Re: Need advice on nutty chicks

That is good news that they are going back in the compartment when they need to. I have a feeling all will be fine.

Re: Need advice on nutty chicks

That is a good thought on opening the other side, but the parents may only go to the existing side to continue feeding the young. When the young reach the age of being able to take first flight, the parents sometimes reduce the amount of feeding their young to encourage them to leave the nest. If th...

Re: Anyone know the estimated martin population numbers?

Thanks John,
I do have 15 minute youtube video out on martins that touches on the different species of martins if you ever wanted to take a peek. Just google in : Purple Martin Life by Dave Duit. Last estimate I saw was also 7 million.

Re: Iowa martin population increase 2021.

Hi Rob, Some landlords have better success trying scramble eggs bits first and place them right on the porch. Remeber not to use oil when scrambling eggs and don't use scrambled eggs for extended times, due to the fact it can cause runny stools. If you google in supplement feeding, there will probab...

HI there, it was me. AIL or Avian Insect Liquidator is a miracle. Sometimes it is difficult to find online. I use it and have seen great results. I wished more people would research it and use it.

Re: Iowa martin population increase 2021.

Hi Dave, Of those that have established colonies the numbers are up. But, for those still waiting to start a colony, I'm hoping that there will be more action. Even if a person doesn't see a successful start this year, my hope is that on their migration south, the new babies will take note for their...

Re: Unhatched eggs: When to discard

I would leave those eggs as is. The parents usually will push a dud egg out onto the porch or near the front of the cavity on their own. Since you have at least five eggs, it leads me to think it is an ASY pair. SY pair will sometimes just build the nest and have one egg, which is sometimes infertil...

Iowa martin population increase 2021.

I have been receiving multiple reports of huge increases in the numbers of martins so far this season; espeacially SY martins. I'm assuming other midwest states are experiencing the same. I think the great success last year is producing the huge numbers this year. Best of luck everyone.

Hey Dave,
Nice to see a fellow Iowan here. Use non-toxic white paint just inside of the cavity walls. You can use your artistic ability in the painting of bird droppings or smears. Best of luck my friend.

Re: Family Photo

Thank yuou for the great pics. It always amazes me how the parent will stay in the nest as long as you are delicate on the nest check. I'm sure you took a quick pic and closed the cavity quickly. Super job. Nice pink babies.I have placed crickets just inside the cavities during supplement feeding an...

Re: When to start checking?

It appears you have the beginnings of a colony. The SY martins play house the first year. After they build their nest, don't be suprised if they only lay one egg in their nest for the season. SY pair have smaller clutches than ASY pairs. I understand how tempting it is to check on them, but just let...

Re: HSOP

Do you not have a sparrow trap that will work ? There are a variety of traps on the market. Pulling nests will not discourage them, they will rebuild a nest in a day. I understand that you may be in an area that you can't shoot a pellet gun, but the trapping is ok anywhere. If you let us know the st...

Re: Sevin 5% dust treatments

Hi Jeff, You will get several opiniions on the topic. I do as you, adding a little to each compartment just prior to their migration arrival and again just before egg laying. Some people wait until the babies have hatched and are about a week old. If the weather is somewhat normal the sevin is good....
