Re: Late Hatchlings? Middle TN

Hello, Allow things to play out naturally. The parents of these hatchling will take care of these youngsters. Depending on the babies ages, you still will have time to see them fledge and head south for the winter. Don't be shocked to see them leave a little later than usual. If the parents complete...

Re: Pedialyte soaked cricket for baby martins during heat

Hi ToyinPA, I'm much like you in helping my martins in any possible way. Some people think we over do taking care of our martins, but I figure we are responsible for their well being and they travel all the way from Brazil. The least we can do, is make things the best we can for their stay in the st...

Re: Troyer Tunnel Conversion of old Trio MK12

Hi MartinMan,
I converted all my Trio MK12s just like yours. I did mine about 15 years ago and to this day they do a great job. Martins love the added safety and depth. Thanks for your post.

Pedialyte soaked cricket for baby martins during heat

Hey everyone, If you are in one of the states that is feeling the effects of high temps, you might want to consider this bit of advice. To assist baby martins during the heat and help the parents feed their young; consider placing pedialyte soaked crickets on a feeding platform. The soaked crickets ...

Re: HOSP takeover

Ditto on the previous responses. Kill all house sparrows, pulling nests is a lost cause. If you are not too good using a pellet gun, hire out a local teenage boy to shoot the sparrows. If you trap, you must monitor the trap until you catch the sparrow. Kill the sparrow from the traps, do not try to ...

Clean crushed egg shells a bonus for the baby martins.

The crushed egg shells offered on a raise platform is a great way for the parents to feed the babies to act as a form of grit as well as calcium to help their bones. Most landlords already know the benefits of cleaned, microwaved, crushed egg shells for the adults; but some may not be aware of the b...

Re: Hand warmers in compartments?

I'm much like Martintown in that I use a long term solution. I have a four plex of metal grandpa modified houses in which I have space behind each house unit. I made a slide in box with open sides and is equipt with ceramic heater elements which do not touch any of the back exterior side of the hous...

Re: Can Someone Help? Where did the Martins Go?

HI James, Your martins are probably second year martins, youngsters that are visiting your site. If there is another colony around your area, they may have chose that site, Martins that chose a site have strong site fidelity, meaning if they had a successful year the prior year, they will continue r...

Hi Craig,
Like ToyinPA mentioned, probably starvation. I know it may be too late with your colony, but please contact as many nearby colony landlords as possible and spread the word about supplement feeding.

Congrats. Now that you have had some success it is time to study up and make sure you are doing everything that is correct in the purple martin world. If you are going to keep with the barn style, be sure to expand the compartment sizes to 12 inches deep. There are instructions online on how to make...

I have variety of different bird species houses, boxes, nesting boxes, etc... throughout my county; about 60 which I check every two weeks. Every cavity gets a little sevin dust and no problems with mites.

Re: Check for capped eggs when doing weekly nest checks.

Hi sawhisker, If the snake netting doesn't work, consider using a pole baffle. The baffle should be wide enough so not to allow the snake to go to the outside of the baffle. Snakes are not inherently a bad creature, they are doing what comes natural. But the baffles work great. The biggest differenc...

Check for capped eggs when doing weekly nest checks.

Just a friendly reminder to look for capped eggs when you do your weekly nest checks or egg counts. I do weekly checks and this week I found a capped egg. For those new to martins; a capped eggs is when a baby hatches his or her half shell flips over onto another egg in the nest that has not yet hat...

Stop martins from running into your house windows. collidescape.org

Hi everyone, Last fall I put in a patio sliding door which is somewhat wide and tall. The reflective nature of most windows causes birds to mistake the window as a reflection of the what is outside, therefore birds will sometimes injure themselves by crashing into the window. I did some research and...

Re: Fall Out Shelter for jumpers

I have a fallout shelter placed in the middle of the gourd rack. I have had mixed success, just like Mel said in the video. Some will stay and allow parents to continue feeding, other youngsters just keep jumping.
