SY's still migrating

For those in the north east looking for SY arrivals.....I've had several SY Males visit it in the last few days. A few of them stopped over a bit then headed straight north. I also had a few new SY females visit. None have stayed yet tho, as I have an ASY Male (no mate), we dubbed "Mr. Mean", who ke...

Re: Wet Nests

Any & all wet nest should be changed. Dampness causes their body temp to drop. Imagine if you had to sleep on a wet bed & pillow all night. You'd be shivering by morning. A wet nest is also a breeding ground for parasites & bacteria. So even tho you may have to do many nest changes it will benefit t...

Re: Central PA Update

Keep the faith Toy, you are too good of a landlord to not bounce back. I guess it's good years, bad years, just like good days, bad days. I'm sure you have many good Martin seasons ahead. Hanover Bill. Thanks Bill. I just hope I can fledge all or most of the chicks I have this year. As of yesterday...

Re: Possible injured fledgling

Hi all, I see a fledgling on the ground. It looks like he is trying to fly but cannot. I suspect that he might be injured. I live in Raceland, Louisiana and there are no rehabbers near me. Any suggestions as to what I should do? Should I just leave him alone. I know adult birds are aware of where h...

Re: Very Warm Martins

Birds will pant, beak open, when hot. If you have chicks & they are hanging out the entrances then they are too hot. For now, in an emergency situation, you can try ice packs. Place some ice cubes in a ZipLoc baggie & wrap it in paper towels or a rag. White color would be best if possible. Some have...

Re: Interesting nest check, re nest question

It could be a couple reasons. One the parents knew the eggs were bad & removed them. Second an SY male tossed them out. HS usually destroy them & let them lay.

Pairs that re-nest will usually use the same nest over.

Re: Break in egg laying?

Weather can dictate a delay in egg laying, as can stress. With SY females they may often not be fertile eggs. If the eggs are not bright white in color they are often bad. I never remove eggs until a full week past hatch date. If they do hatch the youngest ones may not make it, as the older ones wil...

Central PA Update

I haven't been posting much as we've been busy with yard work & painting. I was also dealing with an egg bound Umbrella Cockatoo. My colony this year is much smaller than previous years. All I can think of is they didn't make migration. I had 10 ASY Males. 2 got killed. One by another ASY Male & the...

Re: Where's Toy ??

Good to hear from you Toy. Hoping for the best for your Colony. Hanover Bill. Had to do a nest change (day 5) on the only nest with chicks. Blowfly evident. Blood on feet & legs of both chicks. Waiting for other eggs to hatch. One I thought had been pecked had a tiny piece of shell missing, the mem...

Re: Fledge day during Tropical (rainy) weather

Thanks, Toy. Today I have gourds with babies 21 days old, 25 days old, two broods of 27 day olds, and 29 days old. A couple have fledged out of that last gourd today. So that puts me at fledge date during the forecasted weather. My colony seems pretty good at accepting flipped crickets and feeding t...

Re: Fledge day during Tropical (rainy) weather

If they aren't due to fledge until next week they may hold off attempting to fledge. The downside is at this age the parents hold off feeding them to make them fledge. They only feed them a few times a day, but if the parents can't get any food, due to prolonged bad weather, the chicks may get despe...

Re: Training martins to accept dried mealworms

Hello everyone I was wanting to know how you prepare the chicken egg shells for the martins. I have plenty of eggs and shells for feeding the martins just need to know how to prepare it. JHCox Heiskell TN This is how I do them: I rinse the shells, as I use the eggs & let them soak in a bowl of wate...

Re: Where's Toy ??

Has anyone seen any posts or responses from Toy in Eastern Pa. lately? I haven't noticed any myself, and it is unusual for her not to post or comment for this long. Hope everything is ok with her. I know she was in the middle of the second rough year in a row for her colony with weather issues, etc...

Re: Training martins to accept dried mealworms

I tried supplemental feeding a few times without success. Crows and other birds ate everything that I placed on the oyster shell tray. I have a bag of dried mealworms that I am soaking with the intention of placing them on the tray. The martins are using the oyster shells frequently and are now fee...

Re: Elongated Eggs ??

Bill: In young females, an immature shell gland can cause odd shell shape and is most often of no concern. In older females, oddly shaped eggs can result from stress (including heat stress) or, if they are a regular occurrence, a defective shell gland. Egg binding, often caused by lack of enough cal...
