Re: Nests Failed?

I'd toss the cracked ones & let the rest go a few more days & see if any hatch. It could be SY nests. Some often fail.

Re: Pedialyte soaked cricket for baby martins during heat

Hey everyone, If you are in one of the states that is feeling the effects of high temps, you might want to consider this bit of advice. To assist baby martins during the heat and help the parents feed their young; consider placing pedialyte soaked crickets on a feeding platform. The soaked crickets...

Re: Catching mature jumpers on ground

Great technique. Combining the long pole , but instead of fish netting, the dark cloth… I will adapt to that. The dark cloth will keep them calm, but also easy to catch using the pole.. Thanks, Rob A broom handle pole allows you to stay far enough away, so most chicks stay put, making it easier to ...

Re: Catching mature jumpers on ground

My husband used a old wire hanger, a old handle from a broom & a black t-shirt to make a net to catch chicks on the ground. Whatever works.

Re: Nest check issue - need advice

You'd need to give a better description or post photos. It could be a ruptured air sac which looks like a balloon. It could be Pasty Butt. Pasty butt is loose feces dried on their cloaca. It will dry rock hard, which can prevent them from pooping. Chickens get it a lot too. You need to clean it off ...

Re: Hand warmers in compartments?

I've used hand warmers many times in my houses. I try to place them about an hour before dark. I keep lower levels closed until the weather gets better. That allows me to put hand warmers on the lower level so the heat rises. Most are in the middle cavities during this time. Often they won't go in t...

Re: High death rates

Sorry for all the losses. 3 days of rain would mean no food/insects, so they most likely all starved. Add in lack of insects & it's a recipe for disaster. Adults will feed themselves before they feed their chicks. It's natures way. Martins can not find food, because insects aren't flying.... If it's...

It sounds a lot like Avian Conjunctivitis, but much more contagious & deadly. These are just two of many articles/reports: https://www.ydr.com/story/news/2021/07/01/mystery-illness-killing-birds-pennsylvania-and-9-other-states/7829875002/ https://www.media.pa.gov/Pages/game-commission-details.aspx?n...

Re: Chicadee Interference Redux

Gotham It's pretty natural they left, but they may come back too. There is safety in numbers, so they may have decided to go to your neighbors colony. They often stay a few days, leave, come back, leave, etc. If they decide to stay you'll see them nest building. Sometimes the SY's play house, but th...

Re: A gourd rack of death

Did the chicks have "pasty butt"? If so it's hard to keep them going without daily butt cleaning until they get over it. Paper towels soaked in warm water, carefully wash the crusted poop off. I then put a very tiny amount of Vaseline on their butt, with a Q-tip, to help keep it from getting crusted...

Re: Chicadee Interference Redux

Your SY could still find a mate. Lots of time left yet & many still migrating. If you see more martins at your housing or flying about I'd open a couple rooms on the east side. The east side gets less afternoon sun. You will never get rid of all the HS, but you can lower the amount by destroying the...

Re: Chicadee Interference Redux

A single SY will often hang out with a pair. I've had single SY female & even SY males hang with a ASY pair the entire season. They usually sleep in a different cavity tho. Some SY's are just not ready to mate & have chicks. A pair will often move from one cavity to another until they finally decide...

Bill:

I haven't seen any SY Males yet, but the SY females that are here do seem smaller than previous years. This cold eat weather allowed me to just train 4 SY Females to supplement feed in the last 2 days.

Re: All my martins are dying. Any advice?

Wow what a shame. They can not find food during bad weather, so supplement feeding is required to keep them going until the weather gets better. After day 3 of bad weather....rain, cold, high winds, snow, etc., they start to weaken. By day 4 some may be too weak to fly. Dehydrated meal worms offer l...

Re: Jumpers

Yes high winds can also hamper parents finding food. Hunger will cause the chicks to become desperate & try to fledge. Hand feeding may save some, but not all. Some may be too weak to digest food. Do what you can. Nature has the last word.

Re: Jumpers

Are you saying these chicks are 5-7 days from fledging? If so parents often stop feeding so the chicks will fledge. Dead chicks in each nest suggests it's the heat or lack of insects. The downside is if it's hot they can dehydrate quickly. Once dehydrated they become too weak to eat. Parents also ma...

Often it's the work of SY males pulling chicks out. If they are weak they probably won't survive. Check the nests tomorrow & remove any dead chicks.

To make nests look used just smear a little mud around the entrance & just inside the entrance. You could just move bird poop, but I wouldn't.
