Re: Mites!!!

First year having any birds. My ASY pair has 4 chicks that hatched 6/18. I don't see any mites on or around the natural gourd. Should I add some 7 dust anyway? Thanks in advance. Yes, prevention is much better than having an infestation and babies jumping out of the housing. It only takes a minute ...

Re: Mites!!!

I usually put 1/4 to 1/2 tsp. seven in or under the nest when I see eggs. That gets me thru the season but may have to spot treat some. Liquid seven works great on the outside of gourds especially under the service lid. For some reason, mites love that area. Dave daveh, I saw the liquid Sevin at Wa...

Re: Fall Out Shelter for jumpers

I just went through this with one jumper. I put him back into a compartment with like-sized babies, and he was on the ground again the next morning. I found a second compartment with like-sized birds, and he jumped from that one with-in an hour. No mites, he just thought he was big enough to fly wit...

Re: Jumper-Need help with feeding info

Yes Dave, for sure. I just did a nest check, and all of my houses are empty. No babies (dead or alive), and no pecked eggs, so I guess the season is winding down.

Sad update on Jumper

He didn't make it through the night. He was dead this AM when I went to feed him. At least he died peacefully inside, dry and comfortable with a full belly.

Re: Jumper-Need help with feeding info

P.S. Hoping he gets used to accepting the crickets, I hate prying his beak open but I just use my fingernail to gently pry it open.

Jumper-Need help with feeding info

We had a jumper yesterday, not sure which house he came out of. No mites, he just thought he was older than he is, and wasn't able to fly. Checked the three houses for like-size babies, put him in with them. This AM, he's back on the ground, so I tried another compartment with similar size babies. W...

Re: Possible Tropical Storm

Yea, as usual the forecast track is coming right over my house, so I'm going out to lower the PM houses. Hoping for the best on this one. Looks like we have a long Hurricane season ahead of us, and it's getting started early with this TS.

Re: Mites!!!

Thanks Dave. I'm glad you replied. I remember reading it here in this Forum quite some time ago, but I wanted to put it out there to prevent any complications to the birds. They have gone through enough just to get here without us doing something that might not be good for them. I'm sure Sevin dust ...

Re: Mites!!!

I was looking, but could not find the article that said the diatomaceus earth was extremely dangerous if the babies and adult birds inhaled it. It created severe lung problems, even more so than the Sevin Dust. I always had excellent results when I used the Sevin. I put it in the houses and nest whe...

Re: Mites!!!

I went on Amazon, and put Dust Puffer insects in the search, and it brought up quite a few. All priced pretty cheap. One thing I read when I bought mine, is to put a few small steel balls in the hopper and shake it up occasionally to keep the powder from clumping. I cut open a OO buckshot shotgun sh...

Re: Mites!!!

P.S. Tom and Conrad, where do you find the puffer? I couldn’t find one, so sprinkled the sevin under the nest with a teaspoon, and smeared it all around underneath. Seems like a puffer would be an ideal way get even coverage. Thanks, Rob I can't remember where I got mine. I googled it just now, and...

Re: Mites!!!

They come from the Martins themselves and other carriers (birds, etc) Sparrows, Starlings, etc. Sevin dust sprinkled under the nest will take care of them (after another nest change). Act now before they infest the entire house/colony, and you have too many jumpers to attend to. Go to the feed store...

Re: Anyone know the estimated martin population numbers?

I wonder how the hard freeze earlier this year reduced the numbers? One Martin Landlord in Garyville, La (about 10 miles from me) lost over 100. She said the back yard was black with the dead birds from her colony laying everywhere.

Re: Devastated by Rat Snake

Sorry no pics, I can barely figure out how to take them with my phone, much less send them or post them. Basically, It's 4 pieces of 30 inch stiff wire, wrapped around the pole and extending from it about 18 to 20 inches. One end wrapped around the pole once or twice, and the other end with a small ...

Re: Best time to place a fallen chick back in a nest?

You didn't say if you knew which nest it fell from. If you put it in a nest with smaller babies, it will overpower them and eat all of the food the parents bring, resulting in the smaller babies dying. If you put it in a nest with larger babies, they will overpower him, and he won't get anything to ...

Re: Devastated by Rat Snake

Make sure the netting is held away from the pole far enough that the snake can't go around it. My support wire wraps around the pole and sticks out at least 18 or 20 inches. The end of the wire is shaped into a small loop to secure the netting. The netting is then secured to the pole with wire ties ...
