Re: All my martins are dying. Any advice?

I know by now the Martins have probably perished but just info for the future. An Adult Martin can eat 40 crickets per day. So when your supplemental feeding keep that in mind. My Martins would never eat eggs, so live crickets put in the freezer and chilled for 15 minutes was the only solution. I fl...

Re: Starlings

I have 82 gourds and only use round opening. I guess it depends on how much time you want to invest in your Colony. If you buy a Van Ert trap and mount it to a pole (same height) within 10’ of your Martin housing it will eliminate the Starlings one bird at a time. I usually start around the 1st of F...

Re: Did I mess up?

I usually only lower the pole in the afternoon, warmest part of the day so the eggs/babies won’t get too cold.

And try not to do it but once or twice a week when first establishing Martins at a new site.

Re: Sevin 5% dust treatments

A quarter to half a teaspoon when prenesting and the same when the eggs are laid should preempt any mites that you have. The adults will have mites when they arrive. There seems to be a 2nd infestation when the chicks are a week or so old. Just tap the pine straw with a spoon and the dust will sink ...

Re: No wonder!!! Definitely a rant!!

You might install a 2nd pole and put a van ert trap on it. I would buy one with a large enough opening to catch starlings or sparrows. The Martins won’t go into it, so when it is closed it is either a sparrow or a starling. I’ve always had better luck trapping versus shooting, the body of a sparrow ...

Re: SYs and Pairing Up

It will be loud for awhile. Once they get past who will live in each gourd and begin laying eggs the noise will settle down. Once the eggs hatch it will be a steady stream of insects coming in and poop sacs going out. There will be some singing but there is harmony until, the babies begin to fledge....

Re: help need some advice

This is good news that she is ok. Martins are amazing birds. It is a good idea to seek the contact info for an area avian rehabilitator where you can take martins that are in bad shape. This eventually you will get into a situation that you will need a rehabilitater . And compensate them for what t...

Re: Nest material carrying- is this a good sign?

Males will sit on the ground and watch the female gather material and sit on the gourd and watch her work. He wants to keep other males away from her so the eggs will be his genetic material. When it comes to feeding the babies he will bring more insects in than she will. It is her function to guard...

I always pick up all the Martin feathers I find so I can see how often he is successful.

They will always be in the same place under a particular tree.

Re: Owls at Night

The only thing you will find around the gourd racks is one owl feather on occasion. If you google great horned or barred owl feathers you can become familiar with them. Owls shed feathers continually so if he visits nightly like this one did he will leave a feather on occasion. He puts the side of h...

Re: 1st full nest check in Whippy Casa de Plano

Glad to see that you have eggs, I guess I need to do a nest check.

I know it’s not that early for eggs but the weather has been so cool so late into the early summer.

It will be in the low 50’s and upper 40’s here this week at night, it’s crazy!

Re: Owls at Night

Well it’s been 11 days since I created this post. I’m Happy to report that I am not having any night time visits from the Owls. There are two trees that over the years the Owls have used to pull the flight feathers and eat their Martins. I check every afternoon and so far their have been no Martin f...

Re: Nightmare Day

I am sorry to hear about your loss, I know how that feels. We had a late season ice/snow storm here in Texas in February. I lost 7 Martins. I captured one and put him in a cat carrier. I learned an adult male Martin will eat 8 crickets at a time and in two hours will eat 8 more crickets. I kept him ...

Re: Purple Martins laying eggs in Central Virginia

I try and do nest checks at about 2:00 in the afternoon. If the eggs or hatchlings get too cold they may not make it. Mornings and late afternoon is usually feeding time.

Many migrating Martins spend a day or two with our Martins feeding on insects here at the lake before continuing their migration north.

So I would say food availability and weather.

It’s made by www.ledmall.com

Model: LM-LL-RGBMP-0002

I attached it to a 2X12” board and sat it on the back patio facing the gourd rack and some trees.

It’s been 2 weeks and I haven’t found anymore Martin wing feathers where the owl has been eating them.

Re: Liquid Sprays for Mite Control

... I just sprinkle the powder Seven under the front of each nest a day or two before eggs are due to hatch. This has always lasted long enough to keep the mites away until they fledge. Flyin-lowe, Not sure you do this as well but I put Sevin dust in the nest for when the adults return. Within few ...

Re: ASY nesting at a new colony?

People move frequently and take their Martin housing with them. Or get too old to clean out there gourds or maintain Martin houses.

It sounds like you are the Lucky recipient of this situation.
