Re: Lights for owl protection

I've done motion detector lights, scarecrows, wire cages, and leaving the backyard flood lights on all night. Nothing works here. But for some reason I've not had any problems, I think, from mr owl sofar this year. Fingers crossed. Maybe he choked on one of my martins and died. Brett is right. These...

Re: Storm just toppled my Martin house

I use to lower my houses 2-4 ft before storms arrived. That worked fine until I couldn't lower because Iwas not home. Now, I leave all houses down 2-4 ft.all season long. Does not bother the birds at all. Friday, we had a big thunderstorm roll thru. I lowered them more maybe 5-7 ft down. They did fi...

Re: martin behavior

What I see around here is a half dozen males gang rapping a female on the ground. The other day a female was being raped by 6-8 males and all of a sudden a cooper flew in . The males got away but the female did not. It happened really fast.

Re: Deluxe universal sparrow trap-trio houses

Tom, glad you could find some. You will love them in trio houses. I've got an old one level trio house that has 3 spare-o-trap doors in it. It hangs on my 4 ft chain link fence next to my colony. Many times I've caught sparrows in each door within 5-10 minutes. The caught ones bring in more sparrows...

Re: How in the world do you guys count Martins?

MJM, wood working is my favorite hobby. I have built all of my bluebird and tree swallow boxes. One of my first martin houses I built was the T14. Plans thru the PMCA. It's a great house, easy to lower and raise with winch. I have 12-14 pair in it every year. I hang 4 gourds under it. It's an easy b...

Re: Chicadee Interference Redux

Sight that gun in and shoot those sparrows. Leave compartments open that are easy to target. Get a blind and set it up at a distance you are accurate at and wait. You kill them and they won't come back. THere will be more . You kill them also. It's ongoing but eventually you will thin them down. I'v...

Re: Rolling eggs and pine needles

I always add some structure like needles or leaves to my nest trays if eggs are sitting on bare wood. When the hatch, the babies will have something to grip, leg wise, so that they don't get leg splay which will deform them and probably won't survive. Never had any birds abandoned the nest after add...

Re: Deluxe universal sparrow trap-trio houses

The greatest trap that I have used in my trio houses is the spare-o-door trap SD1, through PMCA store. They are alittle pricey but worth every penny. They are easy to use, take door out and replace with the spare-o-door trap. By far one of the best traps out there.

Re: Starlings

If you don't kill the starlings, they will destroy your martin nests and martins. If you only have a few starlings you can do this but more likely you have boat loads of starlings and the only way to stop them is using starling resistant holes. You will never shoo starlings away. They come back alwa...

Re: How in the world do you guys count Martins?

I count the nests that have eggs or young in them. That gives me a good idea how many birds there are.

Re: Wrens and gourds

I use the black foam tubes to keep pipes from freezing up. Cut them upto fit the entrances. THe slit in the foam will slide onto the edge of the entrance and keep in place. Buy at hardware stores and lumber yards.

Re: Owl guards

Those owl guards (GROG)are designed to work on gourds that swing front to back. I never could figure out a way to make them work on gourds that swung side to side. PMCA has a new owl guard for Troyer gourds that attach to the gourd tunnel. They swing with the gourd which I don't like but might work ...

Re: Gourd vents

I don't think it will bother the martins. I hung several troyer vertical gourds years ago forgetting todrill the holes. There was activity in all of them but Iwent ahead and drilled the holes. No problems at all. Gourds without ventilation can be death traps for birds during july and august. Dave

Re: HSOP

If you can't trap or shoot house sparrows, then you are wasting your time trying to bring martins in. THey don't live together. They will kill martin eggs and babies. Just pulling their nests out will never work. You have to keep both starlings and house sparrows out period.

I add 1/4 to 1/2 tsp. seven when I see eggs. It usually goes in the nest walls, not on the eggs. Seems to deter the mites all seasonbut occasionally will have to add some on certain nests. Sometimes I will add liquid seven to the outside of gourds, especially around and under the lid. Usually the ne...

Drop your housing and see what's going on. Need to drop housing every 5 to 7 days throughout the season. They will get use to you.

I would think that wd-40 would work real well. Spray the joints several times during the season and I think joints should come apart in off season. I use wd-40 a lot for my winches and joints. Works great.

As I said in previous post, lanyards stick so the house doesn't want to come down. That was on my minicastle. Maybe other lanyards work better. Winches on everything here. Life is much easier.

Re: Trio Minicastle

Carlton, I replaced the rope and lanyard system on my minicastle years ago and added a winch and cable system . I never liked the lanyard because it would stick and not lower the house. The winch and cable is the same set up on my castle, 1/16 inch cable. Works well on both houses. Don't know the we...
